We are excited to introduce our second presenter for our upcoming ADP event, Katarina Richter-Lunn. Katarina is a DDes candidate at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design and a recipient of The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans Her presentation is titled: Evaluating the effects of architectural materials to mitigate the severity of anxiety disorder symptoms In this presentation Katarina will talk about her research evaluating the impact of design-driven spatial qualities, such as architectural building materials, on symptoms of anxiety disorders. Anticipating the technology-driven evolution of the built environment, the research proposes an interdisciplinary methodology which relies on both real-time analyses of quantitative psychophysiological metrics and qualitative appraisal of spatial qualities to rigorously assess which characteristics of space have the potential to reduce symptoms of stress and anxiety. The results of this research would be among the first studies which quantitatively assess the impact of spatial qualities on anxiety subjects with heightened psychophysical reactivity. Her presentation is titled: Pediatric Inpatient Room Design: A Neuroarchitecture and Affect Study with VR and Biofeedback Hospitalization impacts pediatric patients' well-being significantly, making supportive design essential. In this presentation, Haripriya will share her study employing virtual reality (VR), eye-tracking, and facial electromyography (fEMG) to analyze how room design influences children's and parents' emotional responses, examining the effects of different room layouts—outboard versus inboard—on 28 participants, including younger children, older children, and their parents. We are excited to announce the third meeting of the Academy of Neuroscience for Architecture (ANFA) Doctoral Platform. Our third event features two researchers sharing their exciting doctoral work: Haripriya Sathyanarayanan EDAC, WELL AP, LEED AP will present her doctoral study on the effects of pediatric inpatient room layouts, looking into children's and parents' emotional responses based on different designs, analyzed through reality (VR), eye-tracking, and facial electromyography (fEMG). Katarina Richter-Lunn will present her doctoral study on how static and dynamic changes in spatial qualities affect anxiety symptoms, using an interdisciplinary approach that combines real-time analysis of psychophysiological metrics and qualitative assessments to determine which spatial characteristics can reduce stress and anxiety.
