The premier economic forum with the goal to support sustainable economic growth & prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region.

About us

Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, or APEC, is the premier forum for facilitating economic growth, cooperation, trade and investment in the Asia-Pacific region. APEC is an intergovernmental grouping that operates on the basis of non-binding commitments, open dialogue and equal respect for the views of all participants. Unlike the WTO or other multilateral trade bodies, APEC has no treaty obligations required of its participants. Decisions made within APEC are reached by consensus and commitments are undertaken on a voluntary basis. APEC's 21 Member Economies are Australia; Brunei Darussalam; Canada; Chile; People's Republic of China; Hong Kong, China; Indonesia; Japan; Republic of Korea; Malaysia; Mexico; New Zealand; Papua New Guinea; Peru; The Republic of the Philippines; The Russian Federation; Singapore; Chinese Taipei; Thailand; United States of America; Viet Nam. The APEC Secretariat is based in Singapore and operates as the core support mechanism for the APEC process. It provides coordination, technical and advisory support as well as information management, communications and public outreach services. The APEC Secretariat performs a central project management role, assisting APEC Member Economies and APEC fora with overseeing more than 250 APEC-funded projects. APEC's annual budget is also administered by the APEC Secretariat.

  • Did you know? The Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific (FTAAP) is a concept initially proposed by the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC) in 2004. Two years later, APEC Economic Leaders acknowledged that it merits serious consideration as a long-term prospect. This publication from the #APECPolicySupportUnit reviews the collective progress of APEC economies in moving forward with the FTAAP agenda. Director, Communications and Public Affairs at APEC Secretariat

Earlier this week in Manila I moderated a panel at the East-West Center International Media Conference which focused on the use of generative AI, climate change reporting, economic trends and the global state of play. Our conversation explored the challenges policymakers face in responding to media-driven public opinion and the likelihood for misinformation and how they can balance this with evidence-based policymaking to meet the needs of stakeholders and the public.   To set context for the dialogue, I introduced APEC’s perception survey on the role of multilateral cooperation and the Asia-Pacific region’s economic drivers. The survey provided insight into how people are thinking about economic issues and their priorities. Our panelists, Undersecretary Charles C. Jose, Lyn Deleña Aquia, Carlos Kuriyama and Cai Ordinario offered their perspectives into the way media narratives, political discourse, cultural influences and personal experiences shape public perceptions of international trade and economic policies.   Some key points to keep in mind:   ✅ Relevant media coverage is crucial to setting the agenda for policymakers — it helps highlight issues that need attention and action. ✅ Policymakers need effective strategies to communicate trade policies and agreements. This includes clear, transparent, and consistent messaging to ensure that the public understands the benefits and implications of these policies. ✅ Data and information are indispensable tools for journalists and the media in their mission to inform the public. Accurate and accessible data ensures the credibility of reports, building trust with the audiences and a solid foundation for storytelling.   Thanks to Suzanne Puanani Vares-Lum, Hartman, Ann, Susan Kreifels and Derek Ferrar for their support for our program and engagement by media professionals and journalists from ABS-CBN Corporation, Bloomberg News, Boston Globe Media, BusinessMirror, GMA Network, Inc., One News, TV Tokyo and Yonhap News TV. My gratitude to Rechelle Tangcangco for organizing the session and for the valuable contributions by David M. and Cassandra Ang. • Earlier today, Chantelle Stratford PSM, Chair of the APEC Policy Partnership on Women and the Economy was at the APEC Secretariat for a conversation exploring how APEC can enhance economic growth through a greater focus on gender equality. Chantelle shared insights on global trends in gender equality and women’s economic empowerment including statistics on women's representation in the workforce especially in leadership roles. Together with the staff from the Secretariat, she discussed the barriers to opportunities for individuals, closing the gender gap, and collective efforts to tackle these challenges, including creating an enabling environment, increasing women’s access to participate in the economy, and breaking gender norms.
