Read on for a sneak peek of this week's 'China 5' newsletter, bringing you the 5 big things you need to know about China each Friday from our experts at the Center for China Analysis ⬇ 1️⃣ The aftermath of the Third Plenum was met with a distinct market yawn, and investors, expecting a turbocharged economic boost, were underwhelmed by Beijing’s cautious medium- and long-term goals — Lizzi C. Lee, Fellow on Chinese Economy 2️⃣ Xi declared “major initial success” in handling this year’s peak flood and typhoon season. Since the meeting, #TyphoonGaemi has claimed at least 22 lives in eastern Hunan Province, while northerly Liaoning Province suffered heavy rains and serious flooding — Neil Thomas, Fellow on Chinese Politics & Lobsang Tsering, Senior Research Associate 3️⃣ The CCP's Third Plenum decision confirmed that China will consolidate its myriad environmental laws into a unified Environmental Code, with a draft slated for internal review by the end of 2024. This marks the first time a so-called Environmental Code has been proposed in a central document — Kate Logan, Associate Director of Climate 4️⃣ The US announced a major revamp of its military command in Japan, labeling China as the “greatest strategic challenge” facing the region. This will likely exacerbate tensions with China, which views U.S. alliances in the Asia-Pacific as “containing” its rise — Lyle Morris, Senior Fellow for Foreign Policy and National Security 5️⃣ On July 28 at the Paris 2024 Olympics, China’s Yingsha Sun and Chuqin Wang defeated Taiwan’s Szu-Yu Chen and Yun-Ju Lin in a fierce, hour-long mixed-doubles table tennis quarterfinal. Four small, trade dependent countries recently concluded a new trade and environment agreement – the Agreement on Climate Change, Trade and Sustainability. In their latest piece in Nikkei Asia, Asia Society Policy Institute’s Vice President, Wendy Cutler, and Director of Trade, Investment and Economic Security, Jane Mellsop, highlight the importance of the deal, both in terms of how trade can be a tool to tackle climate change challenges, and that this agreement is another example of the new trade model of mini-deals being concluded that others are then welcome to join. Asia Society Policy Institute's Center for China Analysis is pleased to share the launch of the Taiwan Policy Database (TPD) - a one-of-kind website housing one of the largest English language resources of original source documents, agreements, laws and exchanges on #Taiwan policy from the perspective of China, Taiwan and the United States, from World War II to present. Spearheaded by CCA Senior Fellow Lyle Morris, the TPD is an online resource that serves to educate the global community on the complexity and historical significance of Taiwan by offering a deep repository of original source documents in English and Mandarin. The website provides one of the largest databases of events on the "Taiwan question" from the perspectives of Beijing, Washington, and Taipei. It also offers an interactive timeline allowing users to filter by event categories across time as well as “narratives” to unpack the complexity of the various issues and policies. TPD’s aim, quite simply, is to educate and inform by offering each party’s perspective on the "Taiwan question" in the most neutral way possible, thereby adding value to the world’s understanding of Taiwan and why it remains such a challenging and important issue. Check out this exciting new resource! https://lnkd.in/dNEiwWgP

I am pleased to share the launch of the Asia Society's Taiwan Policy Database (TPD) - a one-of-a-kind website produced by the Center for China Analysis housing one of the largest English language resources of original source documents, agreements, laws and exchanges on Taiwan policy from the perspective of China, Taiwan and the United States, from World War II to present. The TPD is an online resource that serves to educate the global community on the complexity and historical significance of Taiwan by offering a deep repository of original source documents, in English and Mandarin. The website not only provides one of the largest databases of events on the Taiwan question from the perspectives of Beijing, Washington, and Taipei. It also offers an interactive timeline allowing users to filter by event categories across time as well as “narratives” to unpack the complexity of the various issues and policies. These narrative threads include Taiwanese, Chinese and U.S. perspectives on the origin and evolution of the “One China” policy and Taiwan’s conception of its sovereignty. Also examined are the three U.S.-China Joint Communiqués and their importance, the history of U.S. arms sales to Taiwan, and an analysis of cross-strait rapprochement from 1990 to the present. It also includes an in-depth analysis of the negotiation process of the “1992 Consensus.” TPD’s aim, quite simply, is to educate and inform by offering each party’s perspective on the Taiwan question in the most neutral way possible, thereby adding value to the world’s understanding of Taiwan and why it remains such a challenging and important issue. Have a look and explore this exciting new resource! https://lnkd.in/dgT7zpSP
