My friend Edwin Ong of Asian Hustle Network and I had the incredible privilege of interviewing Tammy Sun, the founder and CEO of Carrot Fertility. Tammy and her team have raised more than $115 million to help employers, health plans, and health systems provide comprehensive fertility care benefits to people globally. Here are a few lessons from her journey scaling Carrot: 〰 Storytelling is a core component of innovation. 〰 The best way to build something people want is to listen to your customers' problems. 〰 Choose a problem you want to work on where you have a personal connection to the issue, especially in healthcare. 〰 In the early stages of fundraising, focus on discovering your early believers instead of convincing people to care. 〰 Different stages of company building can require different employees. 〰 The CEO acts as a culture’s pacesetter. The para swimming ready room ahead of Friday night’s 100-meter backstroke S13 was tense. Then, there were American swimmers Gia Pergolini and Grace Nuhfer. Pergolini and Nuhfer spent their pre-race time singing and dancing, keeping the energy high and trying to loosen the tension in the air. “I feel like the girls in the ready room hate us,” Pergolini joked after her race. The light-hearted pre-race singing and dancing worked out for Pergolini, who earned the first American gold medal of the 2024 Paralympics with a time of 1:04.93 — just short of her world record of 1:04.64.
