We Are Their Voice.

About us

The ASPCA (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) is the first animal welfare organization established in North America and serves as the nation’s leading voice for animals. The organization’s mission is to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the United States. The ASPCA provides local and national leadership in three key areas: protecting and rescuing animals from crisis, assisting animals in communities and advancing legal protection for animals. The ASPCA was founded by Henry Bergh in 1866 on the belief that animals are entitled to kind and respectful treatment at the hands of humans, and must be protected under the law. Headquartered in New York City, the ASPCA maintains a full-service animal hospital, spay/neuter clinic, rehabilitation center for canine victims of cruelty, kitten nursery and adoption facility. In addition, the ASPCA announced a groundbreaking anti-cruelty partnership with the New York Police Department in 2013, which has resulted in a record-breaking number of arrests and animals’ lives saved. The ASPCA also operates programs and services that extend nationwide, including a Field Investigation and Response team that rescues animal victims of natural and man-made disasters, a fully-subsidized spay/neuter clinic in Los Angeles, a Behavioral Rehabilitation Center for fearful, under-socialized dogs, and a 24-hour, 365-day Animal Poison Control Center that provides pet owners and veterinarians with live, on-call assistance related to toxic products and substances. In 2015, the ASPCA acquired Humane Alliance, the nation’s leading training and education organization focusing on high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter. The ASPCA is a privately funded 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization supported by more than 2 million animal advocates across the country.

Our #SupermarketScorecard was just covered by Progressive Grocer! Here’s their take on why our evaluation of stores’ policies and private labels is both relevant and timely for shoppers and the grocery retail industry: “According to the results of a national public opinion survey, 91% of consumers want companies to address the treatment of farm animals and the environment as a part of their corporate sustainability programs, with most willing to switch supermarkets if they discovered that theirs didn’t offer more humane alternatives to factory-farmed food. Progressive Grocer’s 2024 Consumer Expenditures Study found that one-third of shoppers are buying more store brands and consider ethical sourcing to be very important, making higher-welfare private label products a prime opportunity for supermarkets to earn and retain customer loyalty.” Read more below and check out our Supermarket Scorecard to learn more!

Are supermarkets embodying their farm animal welfare policies by giving their shoppers more humane options within their own #privatelabels? This is just one question we set out to answer in our second annual ASPCA #SupermarketScorecard, which ranks the 25 largest U.S. grocery stores on their farm animal welfare policies, progress reporting, and now, private label options for chicken, eggs and pork. Here’s just some of what we found, at-a-glance: 4️⃣ Four stores IMPROVED their policies or progress reporting since last year’s Supermarket Scorecard. ️ 4️⃣ Yet, four stores STILL have no foundational farm animal welfare policies. 9️⃣ Nine out of the 25 supermarkets are aligning their brands with their cage-free policies by offering at least one fully cage-free store brand. 1️⃣ Only ONE store received an A grade this year. To learn which stores these are, and to find out more about the state of the food retail industry as it pertains to core farm animal welfare issues, check out our 2024 ASPCA Supermarket Scorecard, released today! https://lnkd.in/efGp6i86

REMEMBER GOLDIE: It has been three years since Goldie, a young Golden Retriever, died at a USDA-licensed puppy mill and the agency STILL is not doing its job to protect animals. Goldie suffered needlessly at a puppy mill in Iowa while the USDA stood by and watched—documenting her deteriorating condition for months—despite being responsible for protecting the welfare of dogs at breeding facilities under the Animal Welfare Act. Let's remember Goldie as a symbol of change and hope, rather than a victim of neglect. Honor Goldie by urging your members of Congress to pass #GoldiesAct—legislation that would hold the USDA accountable for its inaction and require more frequent and meaningful inspections, lifesaving intervention for mistreated animals, issuing penalties for violations, and more. The agency’s negligence affects thousands of dogs suffering in puppy mills every day, and it impacts many other animals at USDA-licensed facilities who are living in poor conditions. Kitten season may sound cute, but it’s the most perilous time of year for homeless felines. As feline breeding season peaks this summer, thousands of tiny kittens are left vulnerable and in need of critical care nationwide. Many are found abandoned without their mothers, and the youngest orphaned kittens require round-the-clock care – making the situation for these animals dire. We’ve been working tirelessly to provide care for defenseless young felines during this dangerous season for cats. Providing lifesaving and routine veterinary treatments, bottle-feeding young, fragile kittens and helping these animals become healthy and strong is just some of what we do to save lives every day. We urgently need your help as we continue to be there for vulnerable animals during the summer months. Please make an urgent, lifesaving gift today to help us continue to give rescue and care to those who need us most. 🧡🐱 https://lnkd.in/e3bDEj9w

❗ DOGS AGAINST PUPPY MILLS❗ Today is #NoPetStorePuppies Day - a day raising awareness about the cruel reality of pet store puppies and the puppy mills that they come from. These large-scale breeding facilities treat the dogs like products. The dogs live in cramped, overcrowded, and filthy conditions without proper veterinary care, food, water and socialization. The puppies are then trucked across the country to be sold in pet stores and online. Pet stores misrepresent where their puppies come from and continue to exploit them for profit. If you’re considering adding a new pet to your family, we encourage you to adopt from a local shelter or rescue, or learn how to identify a responsible breeder to ensure you’re not supporting cruel breeding practices like those found in puppy mills. On May 31, blendVET partnered with the ASPCA   to bring a student Pathway program to the Children's Aid  in the Bronx, NY 🗽🩺. Over fifty 8th-grade students got to learn about veterinary medicine from the perspective of shelter medicine. Our goal was to show the students the various ways the ASPCA contributes to New York City. This includes community medicine, adoptions, behavior, forensic veterinary medicine, high-volume spay/neuter, and more. "I was a 12-year-old girl trying to find my way in vet medicine. There weren't opportunities like Believe and Belong in Veterinary Medicine for me. I want students to believe that they can belong in this profession. I am grateful to the ASPCA for supporting blendVET’s mission and for working together to increase access to veterinary medicine through education, exposure, and support.” – Niccole Bruno, DVM  . "The students' interest and energy related to animal welfare and veterinary medicine were remarkable. Seeing their passion for helping animals and making positive changes in the world, along with their eagerness to learn more and make an impact, reaffirmed the importance of our work." -ASPCA President & CEO Matt Bershadker. "This extraordinary experience has ignited a passion for animal care and science in our students, inspiring some to consider future careers in veterinary medicine. The practical skills they experienced, the real-world exposure they received, and the connections made with professionals have impacted their academic and personal viewpoints." - Robin Fleshman, Ph.D.  Principal, CACPCS. By introducing students to the different paths in animal welfare and veterinary medicine, we hope to help them see the many opportunities in this field. Educating them about the services available in their community can lead to better care for pets and their owners🐾. Our next Pathway events will be: 📍Sept 10: St Louis for IVECCS conference 📍Sept 13: DC for AAHA conference To join us, sign up here: https://mtr.bio/blendvet #BlendingVetMed #VetMed #VeterinaryMedicine #VetTech

✨ ASPCA Awards 18 Fund-a-Farmer Grants to Help Build a More Humane Farming System🌱🐄 Since 2017, the ASPCA has partnered with Food Animal Concerns Trust (FACT), an organization that works to ensure all food-producing animals are raised in a more humane and healthy manner. FACT’s Fund-a-Farmer grants award farmers who want to obtain or who already hold a meaningful animal welfare certification, as well as to farmers who are improving their animals’ access to pasture. FACT has awarded 695 grants, totaling over $1.3 MILLION to improve farm animal welfare, expand higher welfare farming practices and support work benefiting an estimated 1 million animals since 2012. This year, the ASPCA funded 18 of the grants, bringing our total supported farms through FACT to 128! These grants are vital for creating a more humane farming system, providing necessary resources like adequate fencing, food, water, and other higher welfare practices to ensure farm animals lead better lives. The ASPCA is dedicated to building more opportunities for farmers across the country so they can transition to higher-welfare systems, despite the financial challenges. FACT’s grant programs are a fantastic start, but the demand is high — they received over 600 applications this year alone! Let’s keep supporting humane farming together!
