About us
ACM, the Association for Computing Machinery, is the world's largest educational and scientific computing society, uniting educators, researchers and professionals to inspire dialogue, share resources and address the field's challenges. As a leading global source for scientific information, ACM promotes computer research and innovation through its journals, magazines, and the proceedings of more than 170 annual conferences and symposia. ACM authors are among the world's leading thinkers in computing and information technologies, providing original research and firsthand perspectives. Founded at the dawn of the computer age, ACM’s reach extends to every part of the globe, with more than half of its more than 100,000 members residing outside the U.S. Its growing membership has led to Councils in Europe, India, and China, fostering networking opportunities that strengthen ties within and across countries and technical communities. Their actions enhance ACM’s ability to raise awareness of computing’s important technical, educational, and social issues around the world.

A giant leap for mankind! 🚀🌍 In 1969, #OTD in #ComputingHistory, Apollo 11 touched down on the Moon, and Neil Armstrong became the first human to set foot on its surface. His words, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind," echoed across the globe, uniting humanity in awe and wonder. With the help of computers and people like Margaret Hamilton who built the software system, this monumental achievement was possible.

Happy Birthday Jack J. Dongarra! Dongarra received the #ACMTuringAward in 2021 for his pioneering contributions to numerical algorithms and libraries that have enabled high-performance computational software to keep pace with exponential hardware improvements. A lot has changed over Dongarra’s career, but the software he helped to create is more important than ever. He has come to serve as a public face of the supercomputing user community. Code from Dongarra’s projects has been incorporated into tools such as MATLAB, Maple, Mathematica, and the R programming language. Watch him introduce some of his major contributions and explain what drives him, here: https://bit.ly/3VSVKFz

What are some innovative efforts toward increasing the representation of historically underrepresented groups in computing? Find out in the latest issue of #PeopleofACM as we interview Shaundra Daily, a Professor at Duke University and co-recipient of this year's ACM Karl V. Karlstrom Outstanding Educator Award. Among other topics in the interview, Daily discusses The Alliance for Identity-Inclusive Computing Education (AiiCE), a national cross-sector partnership that aims to increase the representation of historically underrepresented groups in computing through evidence-based, identity-inclusive interventions. Daily contends that greater diversity among the computing faculty is also essential. She believes that by embracing diversity as a source of strength and innovation, the computing field can create a more equitable and just society.
