We are sad to report that a 2nd child has died in Texas from vehicular heatstroke this year. Tuesday, August 20th, in Corpus Christi, a 22-month-old child was forgotten in a vehicle at a middle school where her mother worked. The child's mother stated that she forgot to drop the child off at daycare. The outside temperature that day was 100°F. This is the 25th pediatric vehicular heatstroke death (PVH) in the U.S. this year. On this same date last year, there had been 22 PVH deaths, including 4 in Texas.

At this week's EMS Explorer Post 247 meeting we had Captain M. Lynch from our Special Events Division present about what goes into planning and running all of the special events that occur in and around Austin. Captain Lynch brought out one of our motorcycles and one of our Special Response Units (SRU) and was able to provide some hands on experiences for the explorers. We also had a special presentation as Lt. Commander Y. Bourgeois received a letter of commendation for her actions during a recent Community Health Paramedic Pop-up Resource Clinic. (More on that later.) This was the last Explorer Post meeting for Specialist M. Chen as he is leaving to attend college at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities. What is a Specialist in our Explorer post you may ask? When an Explorer, such as M. Chen, becomes a certified EMT Basic they become a Specialist within the organization. When an Explorer achieves this rank they become mentors to their fellow Explorers, take on additional responsibilities such as taking on teaching roles, and providing educational presentations to the post. Congratulations on becoming an EMT and congratulations on heading off to college.

On Monday the #ATCEMS Community Relations/Injury Prevention team spoke to residents of the Foundation Communities Zilker Studios. We were able to educate residents about Heat Safety for both you and your pets and also provided Hands-only CPR instruction. We also distributed cooling towels to assist the residents in staying cool in all this heat we are experiencing. #ATCEMS is happy to provide training on various topics such as Heat Safety Awareness, First Aid Basics, Lightning Safety, Emergency Preparedness, and Senior Safety / Vial of Life to adult and teen groups of 10 or more. This is a free service provided by Austin-Travis County EMS. Fill out an Event Request Form here: https://lnkd.in/gpR3MXUN to schedule a presentation. #ATCEMS is proud to announce the recent promotion of Kim Griffith to the position of District Commander! Commander Griffith joined #ATCEMS in 2015, and served as both a Medic and a Clinical Specialist in the field before joining our Community Health Paramedic (CHP) Team in 2020. Commander Griffith has also served on our Peer Support Team, the #ATCEMS Honor Guard, with our explorer post, and with the Texas Emergency Medical Task Force (EMTF)- Region 7. Another fun fact about Commander Griffith, is that she joined #ATCEMS as an EMT, and graduated in the inaugural class from our internal Paramedic Program in 2018! Please join us in congratulating Commander Griffith on this milestone in her #ATCEMSCareer!
