You've probably never been to Tuvalu, and you might not ever get the chance. Tuvalu, a nation built on coral reefs, faces an existential crisis from climate change, with scientists warning it could be uninhabitable by 2050. It is the least visited country in the world, with annual visitor numbers in the low thousands. This alarming situation underscores the immediate need for global climate action to prevent further devastation. At Atmo, we’re helping by providing Tuvalu with accurate weather forecasts. For the next decade, we will offer AI-generated weather forecasts that are up to 100 times more detailed and 50% more accurate than traditional meteorological methods. We will also train local staff and incorporate these forecasts into disaster management and climate adaptation plans for the community. When the future is uncertain, the ground under you feels unstable –except this is literally what the people of Tuvalu are facing. Tuvalu is a small island nation made up of nine islands built on coral reefs, making it extremely vulnerable to climate change. Tuvalu is grappling with its very existence against erosion from rising sea levels. Scientists warn that the entire country could be uninhabitable by 2050. At Atmo, we’re giving Tuvalu accurate and reliable weather forecasting. For the next 10 years, Atmo will provide AI weather forecasts that are up to 100 times more detailed and 50% more accurate than traditional meteorology. We’ll provide training to local personnel and integrate these forecasts into disaster management and climate adaptation strategies for local communities. Atmo combines real-time data from millions of weather sensors, satellites, and radars with over 60 years of historical data to create accurate AI weather prediction models. These forecasts update every 15 minutes and continuously self-correct using real weather measurements, improving over time. Unlike traditional forecasts that take hours to produce, Atmo can compute a global forecast in under 10 seconds and at a fraction of the cost, making advanced weather forecasts accessible to those who need them most. The need for accurate forecasting has never been more critical, as extreme weather events become increasingly frequent and severe. Atmo is launching the new national forecast of Tuvalu. Standing just 5 feet above sea level, Tuvalu is a stunning nation of coral atoll islands. Together with the United Nations, Atmo is building a Tuvalu AI forecast up to 50% more accurate and 100x more detailed. A first-ever for the South Pacific!
Exclusive: Tuvalu, the tiny South Pacific island nation vulnerable to coastal flooding and sea level rise, is teaming up with an AI weather firm to better prepare for extreme weather events and climate change.

#Atmo CEO Alex Levy on WRGB CBS6 🌦 "Of the top issues in the world today, AI and climate change and extreme weather have got to be maybe 2 of the top 5, so it’s really natural to start thinking about how we can use the most advanced technology in the world to help address one of the biggest problems in the world.”

Excited to be featured in YC's latest podcast episode 🎙 🔈 “Atmo trained a foundational [weather forecasting] model using machine learning that is more efficient and accurate than the NOAA-funded one, that costs over a billion dollars to run!“ -- Jared Friedman
Building AI models is faster and cheaper than you probably think. This week, we highlight YC startups that developed or fine-tuned foundation models on a budget — achieving breakthroughs in music, protein design, weather forecasting, and robotics in just 3 months. To move this quickly, these companies figured out smart technical tricks that reduce computation with creative model architectures or use less data by applying industry-specific insights. Featuring YC companies Atmo, Can of Soup, Deepgram, Diffuse Bio, DraftAid, edgetrace, EzDubs, Exa (prev. Metaphor), Guide Labs, Infinity AI (YC W24), K-Scale Labs, Linum, Metalware, Navier AI (W24), Osium AI (YC S23), Phind, Piramidal (YC W24), Playground, Play, SevnAI, Sonauto (YC W24), sync. labs, Tavus, YonedaLabs and yondu.
