From tragedy to triumph 🎉🏅 Meet Carson Clough, a local Charlotte athlete and Atrium Health patient representing the United States Triathlon team in the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games. Five years ago, Carson faced a life-changing accident on Lake Norman that resulted in an amputation and limb reconstruction performed by Dr. Joseph Hsu, orthopedic trauma surgeon at Atrium Health Musculoskeletal Institute. Thanks to the expertise and dedication of the entire team, they were able to save one of his legs. Today, Carson is not only running, biking, and swimming - he’s doing it on the world stage. We couldn’t be more proud of his incredible journey and accomplishments. Let’s cheer him as he represents Team USA 🇺🇸 at the Paralympic Games. (Photos from his profile.)

“I’m going to Paris!” Former Atrium Health patient, volunteer with the Trauma Survivors Network and mentor at Carolinas Rehabilitation, Jesi Stracham, is headed to Paris for the Paralympic Games. Jesi, who was injured in an accident nearly a decade ago, is using her personal story to deliver hope and inspire other patients in similar situations. Our Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist and Wake Forest University School of Medicine Comprehensive Cancer Center is 50 years old! Today I had the great pleasure of celebrating the 50th anniversary of our National Cancer Institute (NCI) designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, one of the oldest in the nation. It was such a delight to gather with colleagues and friends to recognize the longstanding tradition of excellence of our flagship program, now led by Ruben Mesa, MD and many other amazing individuals. Discussions touched on our Center's history, pioneering discoveries, landmark contributions to cutting edge care, and deep impacts in our community. I was particularly delighted to welcome my friend and colleague Dr. Warren Kibbe who we were honored to host from the NCI and who made special remarks.
