Most major digital streaming platforms do the bare minimum.
They allow users to play music easily, and that’s it.
There’s no connection between fans.
There’s no engagement.
There’s no real way for artists to reach their audience.
In the top 3 DSPs, there’s little effort to make a better industry for artists or fans.
- Spotify’s main focus is affordability at all costs, even if that means not paying artists.
- Apple Music is just part of a marketing strategy to sell hardware.
- Amazon Music is just an afterthought to their existing products.
To see change in the music industry, we need to get behind platforms and companies that actually care about the artists.
If you want to see what that looks like, go look at platforms like Soundcloud or Audius that actually support young artists and allow them to build relationships with their fans.
We’ve settled for mediocrity.
But we deserve more.
