BARCS is an open-admission shelter in Baltimore serving 10,000 homeless animals and thousands of families each year.

About us

The Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter (BARCS) is the largest companion animal shelter in Maryland and the only open-admission shelter in Baltimore City. BARCS takes in more than 10,000 animals yearly—including dogs, cats, small companion animals, wildlife, farm animals and exotics. BARCS serves as a resource to the community for citizens and their animals in need. In just a few years, BARCS significantly increased the number of animals saved from 2% in 2005 (under Animal Control) to over 90% dogs and cats saved in 2019. The shelter’s services include: providing housing and lifesaving care to homeless animals, public education and outreach, tracking lost and found pets, offering low cost vaccinations and microchip clinics, pet licensing, and the Trap, Neuter and Return (TNR) of community cats. In addition to the aforementioned services, BARCS provides families and individuals the opportunity to adopt loving companion animals and save lives. As Maryland’s largest open admission shelter, BARCS does not turn away any animal in need of shelter, food and a loving touch. BARCS grants refuge to every abandoned, neglected, abused, lost or surrendered animal that comes through our door.

🐾 Meet Squish: A Heartwarming Companion Awaiting His Forever Home🐾 Yesterday, I was graced with the opportunity to spend quality time with Squish, an extraordinary dog, through a volunteer doggy day out organized by Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter (BARCS). Squish is truly a one-of-a-kind companion who remarkably tunes into the vibes of those around him. In serene moments, he is the epitome of tranquility, providing silent support and comfort. On the flip side, when excitement is in the air, Squish is all about fun, showcasing his lively and playful side. Our day was filled with activities that highlighted Squish's versatile personality. From enjoying the calmness of nature together to engaging in spirited playtime, Squish demonstrated his ability to be the perfect companion for any mood. Squish's journey to BARCS was one of resilience; found as a stray a few weeks ago, he has shown nothing but love and gentleness. Impressively, throughout our entire hike, he remained calm and didn't bark out of distress, signaling his well-mannered demeanor. It was only when we returned to the shelter that he voiced a bit, a subtle yet profound expression of his desire for a home. I'm reaching out to my network in Baltimore and beyond: Squish is in search of a loving family that can offer him the forever home he deserves. His ability to adapt to any environment and reciprocate the energy around him makes him a unique addition to any family. If you're considering adding a furry member to your family, or know someone who is, please contact Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter (BARCS) to inquire about adopting Squish. Let's help Squish find the loving home he so richly deserves. Your action could lead to a beautiful friendship and give Squish the happy ending he's been waiting for. PS: If you're intrigued by the idea of spending a day with a wonderful companion like Squish or can open your home temporarily as a foster, it could immensely boost their chances of finding a forever home. Reach out to BARCS Animal Shelter to learn how you can make a profound difference in their lives. #BaltimoreDogs #FurryCompanion #DogAdoption #MeetSquish #BARCSAnimalShelter

Took this sweet pup on a field trip today as part of Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter (BARCS) "Dog's Day Out" program. 🐾 He was rescued from the streets a few weeks ago and has been looking for a forever home. During our walk around Baltimore, we met about 20 wonderful people, one of whom fell in love and submitted an adoption application. I'm thrilled to share that he'll be sleeping in his new home tonight.🏡 I'm so grateful for the opportunity to have met him and helped him find his new family. ❤️

  • Last week, our friends at VCA Animal Hospitals hosted their annual national conference. Lucky for us at BARCS in Baltimore, the commute wasn’t very far… the conference was held in Washington, DC! At the conference, BARCS showcased our new Dog’s Day Out Program. This awesome new program was launched thanks to VCA Charities, who invited BARCS and a dozen other animal shelters to a think-tank and learning session in Los Angeles, CA last year. Not to be outdone, VCA employees participated in BARCS’ Dog's Day Out… while at the conference! Between hours of belly rubs and lots of exciting activities, our deserving dogs were thrilled for some much-needed R&R at the hotel. (If only they could order room service...) Every dog benefits from a break from the shelter—even for just a few hours—which is the heart of our Dog’s Day Out Program. Best of all, four dogs were adopted during this event: Chickadee went to a new home in Virginia, Chicklet and Molly will both be catchin’ rays in California, and Mary Puppins will now call Nebraska home. We were so surprised (and grateful!) to have so many adoptions. A big, barking “thank you!” to VCA for coordinating and funding all of the travel for those dogs. You’ll be pleased to know every dog knew exactly what to do in a hotel room—bounce between the beds and take a deep snooze in those perfectly pressed hotel bed linens!

  • On Saturday, February 10, together with our friends at the Baltimore Humane Society, Baltimore County Animal Services, and the Maryland SPCA, BARCS participated in the "My Furry Valentine" Mega Adoption Event held at Pimlico Race Course. We're thrilled to share that an amazing 79 animals were adopted on this special day, 37 of whom were adopted from BARCS. The "My Furry Valentine" adoption event was generously sponsored by Petco Love. Thank you for being a partner in lifesaving! <3
