About us
Barrio Logan College Institute (BLCI) is a nonprofit organization that prepares underserved students to be the first in their families to go to college through after school programs that begin in third grade. In Barrio Logan, the community served, only one in three adults has a high school diploma and less than 3% have a bachelor's degree. In contrast, BLCI has a 100% success rate of sending graduates to college and a 90% rate of keeping them there until graduation. BLCI is unique in that it starts early, continues to support students through college, works closely with parents, and incorporates leadership skills and civic engagement within the college-prep curriculum. In 2016, BLCI won the national Example of Excelencia Award in the Community Based Organization category by Excelencia in Education, making it a model program for the nation to follow.

Twenty participants from our Chula Vista site joined Outdoor Outreach for a fun-filled fishing day at Bayside Park. 9th Grader, Alex, celebrated catching a baby leopard shark – the only catch of the day! We are lucky to collaborate with programs like Outdoor Outreach because it gives our students the opportunity to embrace new experiences, explore their world, and discover their capabilities, all while connecting with a supportive network of peers and mentors who believe in them and show them that they matter. As the sun’s rays intensify, so does our reliance on air conditioning. Let’s explore ways to keep your home cool while trimming energy bills, plus other energy-saving tips. 1. Block the sun. During the heat of the day, cover windows to block the sun’s heat. If you can, open windows at night and in the early morning to let in cool air. 2. Charge while you sleep. Before going to bed, plug your devices in so they can recharge during super off-peak hours which are less expensive. 3. Pre-cool your home before 4 p.m. Take advantage of lower-priced energy by setting your A/C between 68⁰ and 74⁰ F before 4 p.m. During on-peak hours of 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., adjust your thermostat to 78⁰, health permitting.
