The Basic Education Coalition is a group of 30 organizations that firmly believe every person, regardless of socioeconomic level, gender, religion or nationality deserves the right to a quality basic education. Member organizations work on the ground, in some of the world's most dangerous places, delivering education programs to those most in need. Through education, children and youth build the skills necessary to break the cycle of poverty, create healthier communities and stabilize societies. The Coalition is an independent, non-profit advocacy organization that serves as a neutral space for organizations to come together, learn and advocate for greater support for basic education. With extensive technical expertise and experience, BEC members speak for the most disadvantaged and advocate for global change. In celebration of International Literacy Day, International Development Partners is joining USAID, worldvisionusa/businesssolutions, and FUSALMO to explore the role of local capacity strengthening in literacy inclusion at the “Make Reading Possible for ALL Children” webinar hosted by @WorldVisionUSA on September 4. USAID Center for Education Deputy Director Melissa Chipili will kick off the event with a keynote perspective on the critical role of local capacity strengthening in education systems along with an overview of USAID’s recently released education guidance used to implement the USAID Local Capacity Strengthening (LCS) policy. Science fiction writer William Gibson once said, “The future is already here — it's just not very evenly distributed.” I first heard this years ago, but it's become particularly salient now as our world feels more like science fiction every day and I read more and more about a skills gaps that keeps so many from stepping into our (hopefully) bright digital future. That's why I've been thrilled to work at IREX on a curriculum that helps young people to engage in self-directed digital skill-building that is effective, efficient, and safe. We all know online learning is hard. (I submit my queue of bookmarked LinkedIn Learning as evidence.) It's even harder if you never learned study strategies, are balancing work and family commitments, and don't know the fundamental best practices to protect yourself online. My colleague Maxie Gluckman, Ph.D. and I write more about our digital skill-building work in this #InternationalYouthDay blog for the Basic Education Coalition, including how we used youth research and generative AI to build the story-based curriculum and our pilot experience in Nairobi. Excited to see a future where all young people can access the skills they need to thrive and contribute to the world, regardless of their location in it.

A shout-out to the dedicated colleagues on the Bar ama Baro team, our national partners, and government stakeholders for the many, collective achievements over these past five years. Together, we've created a national, accelerated education policy, distributed over 800,000 textbooks and learning materials, and engaged thousands of youth and community members in enrolment, retention, and school rebuilding efforts. Very grateful to have been part of this journey and delighted to celebrate the (historic) graduation of BAB Level 4 (Grade 8) students this July.
Years of conflict and natural disasters have left nearly 85 percent of children in Somalia out of school. Over the last four years, the USAID-funded Bar ama Baro project has worked with the Somali Ministry of Education, Culture, and Higher Education and other partners to enroll over 100,000 out-of-school children in accelerated basic education. Bar ama Baro — meaning “teach or learn” in Somali, a nod to a 1970s project by the same name — built foundational reading and math skills in a shorter time frame, enabling students to re-enter the formal school system. The project also trained teachers and supported teaching and learning material development. This team used trucks, planes, boats and donkeys to get the materials to students across Somalia and open the door to a brighter future through the power of education. IDP Mourns Loss of Liberia TESTS Chief of Party Written by Hayley Niad, Ricardia Badio-Dennis, and Nick Hoekstra It is with great sorrow that we mark the recent passing of Liana Gertsch, beloved Chief of Party of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Transforming the Education System for Teachers and Students in Liberia (TESTS) Activity in Liberia. Liana’s death was unexpected, and cut short a life of profound contribution to the international education community and to humanity at large. Liana joined our project one year ago, after storied contributions to education activities around the world, including in Bangladesh, Malawi, and Kyrgyzstan. Her smile was warm and her humility and care for others transformative. She could hop between conversations in Hindi, Dutch, or English while enjoying a coffee with a dab of milk or on her way to a water aerobics class. She never met a stranger, because it was not at all difficult to become her friend. Liana was a pioneer in the vision of education for ALL, never shying away from our team’s mission of promoting inclusive education for women and persons with disabilities. Her relentless commitment to equity in education entailed lots of hard work, the ability to manage difficult conversations, to think creatively about solving challenging problems, and a self-assuredness that fighting for what is right is worth the effort. She leaves behind a legacy that we will endeavor to fulfill in some small way, although the quiet, unassuming yet powerful influence she held can never be duplicated. We also hope that Liana’s untimely ending teaches us to lean on one another, to ask for help when we need it, and to care for ourselves as much as we care for others. Unlike the keyboard on which this post is written, there are no backspace or delete keys in the time we have together.
