In this morning’s paper is an insightful conversation between Zack Ruskin and John King, the urban design critic at the San Francisco Chronicle, on the eve of King’s book release, PORTAL: SAN FRANCISCO’S FERRY BUILDING AND THE REINVENTION OF AMERICAN CITIES (W.W. Norton). As Ruskin observes, “[The] Ferry Building has, over its history, acted almost like an emotional ballast for San Francisco beyond its practical offerings as a port.” For his book, King interviewed BCV Architecture + Interiors’ co-founding principal Hans Baldauf, FAIA, as well as Senior Associate Maureen Hardy, AIA, LEED AP.

Since your founding in 1983 by visionary marine biologists John Finger and Michael Watchorn (joined soon after by aquarist Terry Sawyer), you have been a leading light for sustainable, delicious aquaculture as well as an inspiring steward of our marine ecosystems. BCV Architecture + Interiors is honored to work with Sutro Lands End Partners, LLC, and Hi Neighbor Hospitality Group to revitalize a cherished Bay Area icon, the landmark property popularly known as the Cliff House, hugging the rugged cliffs on the western edge of San Francisco, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Helming Sutro Lands End Partners, LLC, is San Francisco native and attorney Alexander Leff who has also been involved with rejuvenating the Malibu Pier in southern California. Mr. Leff states, “San Francisco has been good to me and to my family ever since my grandparents arrived here during World War II… It is an honor to be given the opportunity to restore this beloved landmark and doing so is my way of expressing my gratitude and lending a helping hand to our beautiful city at a moment when it can use help from all of us who live here.”   In recognition of this building’s iconic stature in the city as well as its deep ties with the city’s residents, Sutro Lands End Partners invites the public to visit cliffhousefuture.com to share their memories of the Cliff House as well their visions for its future.   “BCV has been fortunate to work on bringing new life to other notable San Francisco buildings, including the Ferry Building and what is now the Twitter Building,” says Hans Balfauf, BCV’s co-founding Principal. “Our goal will be to institute building improvements and décor that will create a warm welcome for arriving visitors, connecting them to the rich history of the building and its site, and encouraging engagement with the natural environment through activation of the building’s outdoor decks, terraces and street frontages… We want to remake the Cliff House into something that would make Adolph Sutro proud.”   To read more about the National Park Service’s announcement of the award of the lease of this historic property, please click the link below.

Buon viaggio, Hans! BCV’s co-founding Principal Hans Baldauf is bound for the Eternal City where he will spend this autumn as a visiting scholar at the illustrious American Academy in Rome.
