Our team is excited to be at #JFFHorizons next week and is looking forward to sharing more about our various efforts across various industries supporting workforce development.
Last month, I had the pleasure of participating on a webinar hosted by National League of Cities with my colleague Abigail Seldin from Scholarship America to discuss new models for how governments can grow their workforce and address key labor market shortfalls in their communities. It’s an important moment for that conversation, as some of the most critical jobs that support our communities, including in our care economy, health care ecosystem, infrastructure development, climate economy, and government, are experiencing the greatest labor shortage. According to the National Bureau of Labor Statistics, the healthcare and social assistance industries had the highest rate of jobs open in 2023 — of every industry. We are at a critical moment of ensuring we have the right labor force to support our communities, and this is before even considering the new and evolving classes of jobs for which we will need to rapidly train and upskill our workforce. Cost and financial barriers continue to be the leading impediment to credential attainment for adults. At Beam, Formerly Edquity, we’ve seen firsthand how targeted and intentional financial support across a variety of different models that include emergency aid, incentive stipends, and of course upfront scholarship investments can drive transformative outcomes. For instance, students who received emergency aid at Compton College were shown to be two times as likely to graduate as their peers who did not. In a slightly different model, Caring4Cal, a program focused on expanding, enhancing, and strengthening California’s Home- and Community-Based Services (HCBS), has successfully trained 37,000 home-and-community care providers with a combination of training, coaching, and financial incentives. Additionally, we've seen a number of innovative approaches to developing and retaining child care workforces across the country, and we announced this week a partnership with Home Grown, the Thriving Providers Project, to ensure the stabilization of Family, Friend and Neighbor (FFN) caregivers and newly licensed Family Child Care (FCC) home-based providers. These programs just scratch the surface of how removing barriers to education and training and incentivizing key outcomes are helping build a resilient workforce ready to meet the demands of our changing world. Im tremendously excited to be at Jobs for the Future (JFF) #Horizons on Monday and Tuesday to learn about new best practices in the workforce space, including around eliminating financial barriers. I'm particularly interested in discussing climate, green jobs, and IRA, infrastructure and IIJA, issues of care or health care, and our government workforce. If you'll be in DC and interested in connecting, please reach out!

We’re excited to announce our partnership with Home Grown and Thriving Providers Project to administer $4M in direct cash payments to over 600 Family, Friend and Neighbor (FFN) caregivers and newly licensed Family Child Care (FCC) home-based providers. Home-based child care providers care for approximately 11.5 million children, with 60% of them aged 0-5 years old. Home-based child care providers are also the preferred child care provider for a variety of families, including Black and Latinx families, rural families, families with nontraditional or unpredictable work schedules, and those with low incomes. Despite their essential role, home-based child care providers often face significant financial hardships, with 30-40% needing a second job to achieve financial stability. This financial insecurity impacts both caregiver and child well-being, as material hardships can reduce emotional well-being and undermine the quality of care. This initiative seeks to demonstrate the impact of direct cash to reform child care payment policies and influence future decisions around compensation for home-based child care providers. Beam is proud to continue to support transformative more initiatives in the care economy and to work with wonderful partners like Home Grown. One of our values at Beam, Formerly Edquity is that intentions matter, impact matters more. While the intent of this year’s #FAFSAsimplification certainly came from a good place, the impact of the lack of execution has been to make what was already unbelievably hard for students and families a near impossibility -- and threaten the ability of millions of low-income students to attain a credential. With this background in mind, I write about how emergency aid may be more critical than ever this coming year and the unfortunate reality that hardworking staff may have the least capacity ever to maximize its impact.

Our founder David Helene discusses how states might think about proactive investments into disaster relief infrastructure as the hot summer months approach.
Yesterday, I was fortunate to enjoy a beautiful day here in Brooklyn. But as states like Minnesota and others struggle with air quality due to the wildfires currently raging in Canada, I was reminded of what we experienced last June and of the devastation so many communities across the country suffered due to climate disasters last summer. As these events are only expected to get worse in the months to come, I discuss how we need to make proactive investments into disaster response infrastructure and how Beam, Formerly Edquity has successfully supported communities on this front. #disasterrelief #climatechange #digitalinfrastructure
The U.S. struggled to respond to last summer's climate disasters. Let's not relive that.

By 2030, global warming will cause extreme poverty for over 132 million people. As climate-driven disasters increase, we must act now to protect our most vulnerable. ICYMI: Beam founder and CEO, David Helene, explains how we need a full-scale effort across the public and private sectors to combat the climate crisis in a new Forbes Councils article. To make our system climate-resilient, we need a four-pronged approach of increased funding, robust policy, innovative technology, and a team of experts with deep technical expertise.
