🌱 🌊 What a wonderful day to visit Brooklyn Army Terminal (BAT)! Together with New York City Economic Development Corporation, Filip Vanden Bulcke hosted fellow Consuls General and colleagues to catch a glimpse of BAT - an impressive four-million-square-foot campus that is home to over one hundred businesses and over four thousand jobs. As the premier affordable NY hub for modern industrial businesses, entrepreneurs, and working families, BAT is a modern industrial campus, nested at the South Brooklyn waterfront. Fueled by NYCEDC, BAT will also be a frontrunner in climate innovation. By providing several pilot zones with live, built environments, climate tech companies will be able to test, refine, de-risk, and demonstrate their products in New York City’s complex urban environment. Today in The Entrepreneurs, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer at Le Botaniste, Laurent Francois. “Let’s meet at the carrot!” Shortly after we hit the send button, Laurent pops up—a tall man with a welcoming smile and ready to roll. Scrolling through the photos, we agree that posing next to the carrot sounded better than the actual outcome. “Yes, the light is off. Let me fix it!” As Laurent stacks two wobbly stools on top of each other to reach the culprit light bulb, dramatic scenes start playing in our heads: a fall, broken limbs, a hospital visit…. But Laurent manages to unscrew the light bulb and keeps a cool head—a key feature to have as an entrepreneur. In 2015, Le Botaniste—a plant-based, organic restaurant developed by Laurent and fellow Belgian entrepreneur Alain Coumont, opened its first location in Ghent. Four months later, a second restaurant opened its doors in New York. “If you want to grow as a company and expand on a national level, you first need to prove that your concept works locally. That’s why for now, our focus is on NY. And we’re doing great! This year, we’ll be opening two new locations!” When we ask Laurent about his drive and passion for his company, he couldn’t be more clear: “Between me and Le Botaniste, it’s a love affair! Serving your customers delicious healthy and affordable food while knowing you also have a positive impact on the environment is a fantastic feeling to have! Of course, we've faced rough moments too, like the pandemic. But even under those difficult circumstances, there was a silver lining: people became more conscious of the importance of a healthy diet. This open-mindedness towards plant-based food led to an influx of new customers.” As we indulge in Le Botaniste’s signature chili, we smile and say: “This is so good!” “I know! The moment people try Le Botaniste, they keep coming back, even those who are skeptical about a plant-based diet. I once convinced a die-hard meat lover to taste our chili, and he loved it! As we were gearing up for the Federal and European elections, Celine De Vriese joined us for a few weeks and proved to be an excellent asset to our team! "Acting is a journey… Sometimes it takes a while to identify the character you want to play, and how you want to slip into their shoes." With its premiere just around the corner, Sebastien Waltzing is ready to take on his lead role in Funérailles d’Hiver, a L'Atelier Théâtre NY production directed by Faustine Lefevre- Kooijmann. “Dying, that’s one thing… but not the day before a wedding!” An elderly aunt has the bad idea of passing away the day before her niece’s wedding. Naturally, her grieving son wants everyone to attend the funeral. But his family is not too keen on canceling the long-awaited nuptials… leaving them with only one option: escape! "On the surface, Funérailles d’Hiver might feel like an absurdist comedy, but it is also an excellent satire, inviting the audience to peel away society’s layers and reflect on its core. What makes this play even more special is its unique tactile dimension: we make use of the entire space during the play so that the audience becomes more than a mere observer." Back in September 2023, Sébastien rekindled his love for acting and joined a workshop in L’Atelier Théâtre, a troupe of theater enthusiasts offering French drama classes. "I’ve always engaged with theater - even as a kid. Growing up in Namur, I would act, sing, and direct! So to be back on stage after a long break feels amazing - especially with this wonderful group of actors. During our rehearsals, we connect over how we can truly embody our characters. Faustine is key in these conversations, challenging us to play our roles in various ways and keep the audience engaged." Having reconnected with his childhood passion, Sébastien is also looking into improvisation classes in English, and singing too. "I’m stoked about exploring my options!
