Honoring the legacy of Erik Knapp through advocating strength and providing assistance for families impacted by cancer.
About us
The Big Tree Memorial Fund is a Maryland-based 501c3 advocating strength and providing assistance for families impacted by cancer in the legacy of Erik Knapp who passed from Glioblastoma in 2020. June 21, 2020 was Erik Knapp's first Fathers Day. His beautiful daughter, Parker, was born on Valentines Day the same year and they had plans to celebrate with their amazing wife and mother, Ashley. However, Erik was convinced to go to the hospital by a friend Fathers Day morning after his terrible headaches hadn't improved. Hours later, the worst case scenario became too familiar; a large brain tumor was discovered. He was diagnosed with Gioblastoma, an aggressive and fast-growing brain cancer, and was flown to John Hopkins in Baltimore for the best possible chance. Two days later and with his wife by his side, Erik passed. The story doesn't get easier. Erik was a healthy, active, University of Maryland-obsessed 36 year old man. He lit up the room, he was the "rock" for entire groups of people, friends, family, coworkers and neighbors. From football dreams at St Johns High School to being UMD's biggest fan in head to toe Under Armour, Erik seized the chance to make every opportunity special. He was stubborn and he was a fighter and if he had been given the smallest chance to survive in June, he would be here with us right now. Since he can't, we have started the Big Tree Memorial Fund, an organization to honor the legacy of Erik Knapp and advocate strength and assistance for those impacted by cancer. While the organization is still being put together, we don't want to wait to start making a difference. The organization will go "live" on Erik's birthday, November 5, and we will channel Erik's energy and power in all of our efforts to raise awareness and financial support for those who need it.

Artificial intelligence is outpacing doctors when it comes to detecting a common cancer in men. A new study from UCLA found that an AI tool identified prostate cancer with 84% accuracy — compared to 67% accuracy for cases detected by physicians, according to a press release from the university. Unfold AI, made by Avenda Health in California — a software recently cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration — uses an AI algorithm to visualize the likelihood of cancer based on various types of clinical data. “Immunotherapy Is Changing Cancer Treatment Forever. His brain tumor was a hopeless case. Then an experimental medicine made it melt away.” Within the past 20 years, a once unfashionable field called immunotherapy has upended all expectations in oncology. It proceeds from a simple premise: The human immune system is very good at attacking anything it registers as disease. If it could be turned against cancer, it could eliminate a tumor more thoroughly than a surgeon’s knife and more durably than the poison of chemotherapy. Really big news and potentially a game-changer! Read the article: https://lnkd.in/efDaCRRK #glioblastoma #braincancer #immunotherapy
