I recently joined Jonathan Capehart on The Saturday/Sunday Show to speak about Bloomberg Philanthropies’ historic $600 million investment to the endowments of our nation’s four historically Black medical schools. We covered a lot during the discussion including the importance of diversifying the medical field and impact of our first $100 million gift to these schools. To learn more, watch the interview.

Climate change impacts our health, planet, and the economy - and Mary Schapiro leads a number of efforts to involve the financial sector in the environmental movement, by helping companies better understand and disclose the climate-related risks they face, and by helping drive greater private sector investment in climate solutions.
Huge congratulations to Mary Schapiro, who won the inaugural Insight Investment – University of Oxford Prize for Greening Finance in the Outstanding Service category. As part of the Prize, Schapiro gave a lecture titled ‘Looking back and moving on: reflections on forty years of changing climate, law and finance’ in Oxford on 12th June. Watch the lecture again here: https://lnkd.in/enbUgHqt. Schapiro is Vice Chair for Global Public Policy of Bloomberg L.P., Vice Chair of the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero (GFANZ) and Chair of the Climate Data Steering Committee (CDSC). She is also former Chair of the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). In her 2023 Prize citation the judging panel highlighted Schapiro’s instrumental leadership in establishing the new global architecture for #sustainability #reporting. She led the development of the FSB Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) and the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB Standards), the two fundamental pillars of the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB). Last fall, families were promised a streamlined federal student aid application: the Better FAFSA. The results were nothing as promised. “Now is the time to contain the FAFSA fire and establish good practices that support talented students with lower- and moderate-incomes,” write Nicholas A Watson of our education team and Tania LaViolet of The Aspen Institute. Read the full article in The Hill to learn more about the FAFSA crisis and how the American Talent Initiative could draw crucial inspiration for the solution. https://lnkd.in/evSJcuTT

Welcome to our newest Bloomberg Distinguished Professor, renowned scholar Ebony McGee, who joins The Johns Hopkins University as the BDP of Innovation and Inclusion in the STEM Ecosystem. She is joining the Advancing Racial Equity in Health, Housing, and Education BDP cluster. McGee studies how racialized biases and marginalization impact graduate and career trajectories for high achieving historically marginalized students, linking STEM educational experiences with racial trauma. She holds dual appointments in Johns Hopkins University School of Education and Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. “High effort coping against racism kills slowly—you can literally work yourself to death,” says McGee. “High-achieving Black folks are dying at accelerated rates at younger ages than their white peers, and there is something wrong with that.” McGee is currently working on her second book, which will present equity ethics as a key framework for transforming STEM to help reverse—rather than exacerbate—global climate change and thereby maintain human survival on the planet. https://lnkd.in/ed8VmCXE
