About us
Blue Ridge Area Health Education Center (AHEC) is a 501(c)(3), not-for-profit charitable organization based in Rome, Georgia. Blue Ridge AHEC is a partner with the Georgia Statewide AHEC Network, a partnership coordinated by Augusta University. Our mission is to support the recruitment, education, training and retention of a diverse health professions workforce in the 20-county northwest Georgia region. We accomplish this by “Growing Our Own” health professionals. Studies show that students are more likely to practice in the communities where they were trained. This begins by creating a “pipeline” of students in grades K-12 who are interested in healthcare, informing them about health careers and helping them to explore opportunities to serve, particularly in rural and underserved communities. Blue Ridge AHEC supports college students in advanced health professions programs as they undergo their clinical training, by providing housing, travel support, credentialing and assistance in obtaining preceptorships. Once a provider choses to live and work in northwest Georgia, Blue Ridge AHEC continues to provide support through continuing education programs (CE/CME) for existing health professionals. In addition, we offer an excellent RN Re-entry Program, which is approved by the Georgia Board of Nursing to provide a combination of 40 hours of study relevant to nursing and 160 hours of supervised nursing practice, required for the reinstatement of licensure as a registered professional nurse. This program is designed for nurses whose licenses have lapsed or are inactive and are presently eligible for reinstatement. Nurses who are returning to direct patient care and have active licenses may also benefit from this program. We pride ourselves on establishing community-based clinical training sites, identifying resources and developing networks, and developing strategies for retention and continuing education of health care professionals.

We are so proud of Susan! She is an inspiration to so many and we can't wait to see all she will achieve in her career as a nurse. While she has officially graduated from our AHEC Scholars Program, she will always be a Scholar to us!
A life-saving surgery inspired Susan Regan to become a nephrology nurse. Born with renal issues, Susan received her first kidney transplant at age 11. Fourteen years later, her body rejected the kidney, and she was on dialysis for eight years before receiving her second transplant in June 2015. 💚💙 Fueled by a life motto to “never give up,” Susan joined the #AHECScholars for support on her professional journey to become a nurse. As part of the Blue Ridge Area Health Education Center (AHEC) Scholars program, Susan attended community-wide health fairs and specialized trainings. She credits AHEC Scholars with increasing her awareness of health disparities in her community and encouraging her to ask more in-depth questions of patients to help treat underlying conditions, and not just symptoms. Susan graduated from Georgia Highlands College in May and has accepted a job with Fresenius Medical Care at an outpatient dialysis clinic. She says, “I look forward to sharing my journey and motto while giving hope to the patients I care for.” 🌟 Congratulations, Susan! You have achieved so much already, and you will make an incredible nurse!

Congratulations to the 18 exceptional students who graduated from the Blue Ridge AHEC Scholars Program tonight! We enjoyed a wonderful celebration led by Mandy Hunter, our Director of Student Enrichment Programs. Tremendous thanks to Georgia Northwest Technical College for allowing us to host our celebration at their Gordon County Campus! These students in the fifth cohort of AHEC Scholars were joined by friends and family and praised by leaders from their colleges, including: Dr. Lisa Jellum, Dean of the Atrium Health Floyd School of Health Sciences, Georgia Highlands College Dr. Gina Kertulis-Tartar, Dean of the School of Health Professions, Dalton State College Dr. Michael Waters, Assistant Dean of Clinical Education, PCOM Georgia Deseri Wooten, MSN, BSN, RN, Nursing Lab Coordinator, Georgia Northwest Technical College We are so honored to be part of the educational journey for these future health professionals! 🩺

Yesterday, the Georgia Chamber and the Georgia Partnership for Excellence in Education hosted a fabulous summit on the Future of Talent & Workforce Preparedness! The event took place at Georgia Tech and featured discussions on how to increase workforce preparedness for our next generation of talent and our current workforce, using innovative strategies and proven models. This topic is extremely relevant to Blue Ridge AHEC, as our mission is "to support the recruitment, education, training and retention of a diverse health professions workforce throughout northwest Georgia". I was particularly interested in the sessions on “Increasing Preparedness in Georgia's Healthcare Industry” and “Innovations in State Initiatives”, which featured Sonny Perdue (Chancellor, University System of Georgia), Greg Dozier (Commissioner, Technical College System of Georgia), and Richard Woods (Superintendent, Georgia Department of Education). Next stop: I’ll spend the rest of this week with 4000+ future healthcare leaders at the Georgia HOSA State Leadership Conference!

Congratulations to our Executive Director, Caroline Aultman, for her recent appointment to the Board of Directors for Harbor House, the Northwest Georgia Child Advocacy Center! Harbor House is a Child Advocacy Center which serves a vital role in our community, working with children who are victims of sexual & severe physical abuse, offering prevention programs to help stop abuse before it starts, and providing intervention where abuse may have occurred. The center collaborates with partners in the nonprofit, medical, social services, law enforcement, child protective, legal, and education communities to do their important child advocacy work in Floyd and Polk Counties. More than 7,200 children have been interviewed at Harbor House since it was established. Our Safety Awareness For Everyone (S.A.F.E) Program has reached more than 30,000 elementary school children since it began in 2007. Today, Harbor House provides family and child advocacy services to every client that we see, and on-site trauma-focused therapy services for the children that we see and others in the community who cannot find access to care, free of charge. Harbor House also encompasses Floyd County CASA, which provides training and supervision to volunteers who advocate for the best interest of abused and neglected children who are under the jurisdiction of the Floyd County Juvenile Court. CASA volunteers are everyday people of all ages and backgrounds who are willing to be the voice of an abused or neglected child involved in Juvenile Court proceedings. The goal of the CASA volunteer is to find every child a safe, permanent, loving home as soon as possible because… Every child’s voice deserves to be heard.
