This summer saw a plethora of elections in Europe, both in the European Parliament and member states like the snap election in France. On September 12, we’ll break down these results, and their impact on the transatlantic relationship, with Europe experts Professors Daniel Kelemen, Matthias Matthijs, Kathleen McNamara, and Abraham Newman! Lunch will be provided, but the space is limited to 45 guests. Make sure to RSVP before spots run out!

Last week, we welcomed our newest cohort of Georgetown University Walsh School of Foreign Service MAGES students, an extremely transatlantic group with students hailing from the United States, Germany, the UK, Croatia, Italy, and Taiwan! After a MAGES orientation in the morning, the students headed on their “Transatlantic Tour” of DC, with stops at the Atlantic Council and European Union Delegation to the United States to learn about possible career and internship opportunities. We ended the day with our annual Welcome Back BBQ, where our new students got to mingle with second year students, alumni, and faculty (as well as gorge on some incredible brisket). Drop a piece of advice to these new students in the comments!

We're thrilled to have Sam Denney and Alix Lawson as Co-Presidents for our Alumni Association! Huge thanks to Pete Giannino for his years of service.
Senior Research Analyst at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, 2023-2024 Penn Kemble Fellow
Proud to share that I've become the Co-President of the Alumni Association of the BMW Center for German and European Studies at the Georgetown University Walsh School of Foreign Service. Helping the next generation of experts and policy practitioners gain skills, acquire expertise, and navigate professional uncertainty is one of the most important things we can do as a foreign policy community. And I am greatly looking forward to doing my small part alongside Alix Lawson in this new capacity. Please don't hesitate to reach out with any lessons you have gained that we might be able to pass along.

Happy Orientation Week to our incoming MAGI!
Welcome to the Hilltop, SFS graduate students! We are so happy to have you here! This afternoon, students had a packed graduate orientation schedule of activities and introductions with their peers and SFS leaders, including a welcome from SFS Dean Joel Hellman. Highlights included an introduction to key facts of Georgetown University from Professor Anthony Clark Arend (SFS'80) and a panel discussion on how SFS engages on contentious issues featuring incoming Security Studies graduate student Chantal Li (SFS'25, SSP'26); Professor Fida Adely, director of the Center for Contemporary Arab Studies; and Professor Matthew Kreonig, professor in the department of government and the School of Foreign Service. The panel discussed the free speech tenets of the university and how this is played out in the classroom and student life. An opportunities fair featuring the SFS Career Center and the SFS Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion followed, and everyone closed out the day with a happy hour. Thank you for joining us!

This is a great opportunity to intern at the German Parliament, and the application deadline has been extended to August 31! https://lnkd.in/g2XQkAf "In collaboration with Berlin’s three major universities, the German Bundestag offers the prestigious IPS program to politically engaged college graduates from around 50 countries, including the USA and Canada, who wish to play an important role in shaping the future of democratic cooperation – in their respective countries, and internationally. Under the patronage of the President of the German Bundestag, the IPS program allows participants to gain first-hand knowledge of Germany’s parliamentary system and political decision-making process during a 3-month work placement with a Member of the German Parliament. Participants also take part in a rich educational program with the German political foundations and have the chance to enroll in university classes, spending a total of five months in the German capital (March 1 through July 31, 2025). IPS is open to college graduates (bachelor’s degree or higher) who are U.S. or Canadian citizens (or citizens of other participating countries), under 30 years old on March 1, 2025, and have a very good knowledge (B2+) of the German language. Candidates should also be familiar with the basic features of German politics and society. Applicants must have completed their undergraduate studies and be able to offer proof of their degree by December 31, 2024."
Last chance to apply for an awesome internship at the German Parliament (Deutscher Bundestag - Verwaltung)! IPS offers you the incredible opportunity to be at the center of it all in one of the most exciting places on the other side of the pond, Berlin! The deadline is now 8/31.
