About us
The Bonobo Conservation Initiative (BCI) is dedicated to ensuring the survival of the bonobo (Pan paniscus) and its tropical forest habitat in the Congo Basin. By working with indigenous Congolese people through cooperative conservation and community development programs, as well as on the national and international levels, BCI is establishing new protected areas and leading efforts to safeguard bonobos wherever they are found. BCI is a creative convergence of diverse, dedicated and distinguished individuals from a range of disciplines who share a common commitment to the survival of the bonobo, mitigating global warming through rainforest protection, as well as peace and prosperity in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Today, February 14th, is also known as World Bonobo Day—because the day of love is the perfect time to celebrate our sister species! Known for their affectionate and amorous ways, bonobos show us that peace is possible when we act with compassion and cooperation. Thank you for your caring support of bonobos and their rainforest home. We hope you have a very “bonobo” day filled with love, joy, and kindness!
