Well that was different! And certainly on the edge of experiences I've had to date. Which is great - because that's where growth happens ... right? It wasn't perfect, but I got through it! I am of course talking about the talk that I will be giving at the CMG Learning & Development Conference, taking place in July. It's pre-recorded, with live Q&A sessions. Hence my trip to their recording studio today. I'll be talking about creating a culture of learning through personalisation and touching on things like a #dynamicframework, #personalisedlearning, #squigglypaths, #adaptivedevelopment and the role of L&D in this context. Did I mention it was all about #learning 🤔 Basically, I'll be saying that helping people solve problems they are experiencing can do more than develop the person, it can change minds. And L&D, technology and good #learningdesign have critical roles to play in achieving that. Not sure what that says about my learning experience today ... #deepend anyone? 🏊♀️ CMG Training - The Irish Institute of Professional Education Boost Learning

Do you work with someone you don't like? Do you hear or say 'Don’t take it personally’ often? This one is definitely for you then. In this episode of The Manager's Moment, Damien DeBarra, a leader of talent and development design teams, reflects on some of the mistakes he has made as a manager and how he grew from these. He shares his thoughts on the link between anxiety and workplace behavioural issues, and how he has navigated these when dealing with difficult clients. His key takeaway is that managers cannot assume that the people they hire or engage with have developed core life skills, like how to get on with people. Damien also distinguishes between over-management and micro-management, shedding light on their impacts. You can find The Manager's Moment on Spotify, Apple or almost anywhere you get your podcasts. Self-sabotagers. Internalisers. The quiet people. The nay-sayers. Because people are people, what is the job of the manager when people don't show up as we expect them to? This is the second of a two-part episode and in this part, Brenda McGuirk zooms in on the individual in the team. She reflects on the tyranny of having to be a team player and warns against the manager, through their behaviours, demonising somebody in the team. She offers a way for the manager to create an environment that facilitates, not isolates, the quiet or dissenting voices in a team. If part 1 was about teams in moments of change, this part of our conversation is about the person in the team. And of course about Brenda herself and why she is very happy at this stage in her career not to be managing people. The Manager's Moment, a Boost Learning podcast. Seeing the person in this, and in every moment. Available on Apple, Spotify and most places where you find podcasts. Yes, I'll be speaking but more on that later. Indulge me in a moment of reflection. In the early years of my HR career I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to set up, shape, grow and manage a HR function. As everyone does in small and start-up companies, I carried many hats, and L&D was one of them. Ambitiously from the start we pursued the Irish Excellence Through People (ETP) award (now run by National Standards Authority of Ireland) partnering with the UK's Investors in People programme. As a result I, the company and the Leadership of the business had the opportunity to think and institutionalise culture, impact, leadership and alignment as inseparable from learning, development and people. It helped that we ourselves were an education technology business concerned with helping people and organisations bridge the digital divide through education. Many of the guests I have had on The Manager's Moment, a Boost Learning podcast, have some connection to that company and it has been fascinating to check in with people a decade+ later. Where did these people go and how does the culture of learning we held at the nucleus of the company's core show up in the trajectory of their careers? It is not therefore by accident that at the L&D Conference 2024 I will be speaking about creating a culture of ongoing learning through personalisation. I'll be touching on things like: - leaning on design thinking to solve a problem like 'I don't have time to learn', - respecting and leveraging learning design principles in pursuit of personalisation, - creating pathways and portfolios that reward and support a culture of learning and - putting AI and other technology in perspective and in its place when it comes to ongoing learning + culture + personalisation. #culture #elearning #personalisation #learninganddevelopment #legacy

How does where, when and into which community you are born shape you? My great friend and Dublin woman, Brenda McGuirk, chats about starting a career in the 1980s in Ireland (before contraception and divorce became an option for women), where her efforts took her and how these early experiences influenced what she pays attention to as she goes about managing products, programmes and people. This is the first of a two-part episode and in this part, Brenda talks us through an example of what she means by "a process or team that wants to change itself" and her role in making that change happen. As an aside, there are moments in life that really give one pause for thought. Collaborating with Brenda on this episode did just that. How lucky and privileged am I to call this person friend and even, as I consider our conversations over the years, mentor. It is with great delight I bring Brenda's perspective, in the context of The Manager's Moment, to a much wider audience. #changemanagement #dublin #1980s #leadership #productmangement #team #management #podcasts #peoplemanagement #programmemanagement Boost Learning SoapBox Labs

Is it possible to wave a magic wand and get things done, without actually doing them yourself? What if that magic wand was, in fact, effective delegation? Imagine this. In the bustling city of Dublin, there's a manager named Chris. Chris is the head of a thriving marketing department. With a team of ten under her, she was always swamped with work, often staying late, missing social gatherings, and feeling the pressure. Then, one day, Chris stumbled upon the 'Delegate to Motivate' programme by Boost Learning. Through the programme, she began to understand the motivations of her team, their strengths, their aspirations. She enhanced her approach to delegating, learning to assign tasks based on more than role and availability, but also on capability, interest and potential for growth. The change was not overnight, but it was profound. She saw her team members stepping up, taking on responsibilities, and most importantly, growing. Chris was no longer working late into every night; instead, she was able to spend more time strategising, planning, and yes, even making it to those dinners with friends and family. This is the power of effective delegation. It is not just about getting work done, but about creating an environment where everyone thrives, where everyone is motivated, and where everyone is engaged. Boost Learning's 'Delegate to Motivate' programme can equip you with the skills to delegate effectively, to make that magic happen in your team.
