We’re excited to partner with Portland State University to lead conceptual design for a new performing arts + cultural center! Our design is one of three options being considered by the City of Portland. “There is nothing more inspiring than working with a great partner to envision a project that will be truly transformational for downtown Portland. This is a chance to create a visionary artistic and community resource to serve our city for the next 100 years,” said Bora Principal Michael Tingley. The proposed mass timber multi-use arts and culture complex on PSU’s University Place Hotel site will feature a 3,000-seat auditorium, a second 1,200-seat performance venue, a hotel, and community and educational space—a bold effort elevating the arts and catalyzing development within the downtown core. The numbers are in: we’re proud to say that the 2023 move to our LEED Platinum Volta building has reduced our operational carbon emissions by 34%! Add this to the fact that we have offset 100% of our carbon footprint since 2006, cutting annual emissions from 1.5 million to under 500,000 pounds, and we’d say this is a big win. In 2023, we expanded our carbon tracking to include employee commute patterns, offsetting 64,000 vehicle miles traveled. Our offsets, purchased through the Bonneville Environmental Foundation, have most recently supported a Native American hardwood forest conservation project in Minnesota. We remain dedicated to reducing our carbon footprint and are encouraged to see that the intentional design choices we make can have significant—and ongoing—impacts on our planet. We align with Prosper Portland's Green City initiative by working towards a more sustainable future alongside many other A&E firms in the area including Alta Planning + Design. “This building presents opportunities to not only highlight and showcase what we’re doing—in particular our values around sustainability—but to do that within an emerging neighborhood that has both new buildings and adaptive reuse of existing buildings.” – Bora Principal Brian Squillace on our new office building located on the Central Eastside.
Did you know that Portland has twice the number of engineers compared to the rest of the US? Architects and engineering offices remain committed to Portland and are expanding their footprints because a vibrant urban environment is central to their mission and their firms benefit from the competitive advantage Portland has in Green Cities. We connected with Katie Mangle at Alta Planning + Design and Brian Squillace at Bora Architecture & Interiors, who both made exciting moves to new office spaces in Portland’s Central City, to learn more from their leaders about why they are committed to Portland. Physical models serve as vital creative tools for clients and the community to engage with as they envision their built project. The skill and precision that goes into model making embodies the architectural process at its core as it tangibly manifests a design idea. Here, designers on our Portland Public Schools Ida B. Wells High School modernization team meticulously refine a model of the site to help community members visualize the possibilities for their new school.

Next week we’re honored to be presenting our Portland State University Vernier Science Center project at the Society for College and University Planning (SCUP) 2024 Annual Conference! More than a complex renovation, this project embodied PSU’s commitment to diversity in an integrated planning process that engaged BIPOC student voices throughout design with intention and authenticity. The reimagined building dramatically shifted design outcomes, challenging institutional norms and broadening perspectives in science education. Bora Associate Principal Amy Running, along with PSU student Athena Rilatos, Jason Franklin (PSU Associate Vice President for Planning, Construction & Real Estate), and Todd Rosenstiel (PSU Dean, College of Liberal Arts & Sciences), will share how our outreach-driven process led to an inclusive science facility dedicated to empowering a more diverse STEM workforce. This past weekend we celebrated the grand opening of Multnomah County Library - Holgate Library in Southeast Portland. After 18 months of construction, this is not only the first new, permanent library to open in Multnomah County in more than a decade, but also one of the largest and most energy efficient. Tripling the size of the original 1971 library, the new Holgate Library features a design inspired by the fluttering wings of a butterfly—a universal symbol of hope and transformation—to foster a culture of civic pride among community patrons of all ages and backgrounds. In a true collaborative effort, key design elements like the exterior color were voted on by the public, while an exterior mosaic features tiles hand-crafted by community members. “The improvements at Holgate Library are going to be truly transformational,” said Vailey Oehlke, former Director of Libraries. “To go from a small, 6,400 square-foot space to two stories and 21,000 square feet, it’s the perfect example of how library spaces can—and should—change and grow alongside the community.” Big congrats to Multnomah County Library - Holgate and the many hands and voices that had a role in bringing this beautiful vision to life. Portland community—welcome to your new library!
