Musselroe Wind Farm – Far north east Tasmania I was lucky enough to spend a day at our Musselroe Windfarm (56 turbines, installed capacity 168 MW). Woolnorth staff were overseeing the construction and installation of IdentiFlight towers. IdentiFlight is an aerial detection system, that blends artificial intelligence with the high-precision optical technology (8 cameras per tower) to detect eagles and other protected avian species, to protect them from collisions with rotating turbine blades. Automatic detection and species determination occur within seconds, the observations are sent to our control centre, and if a collision looks likely, it can stop a wind turbine from rotating (curtailment) within seconds. From the technical minds of engineers, I learned the basics of wind generation; for the layperson: Wind turbines work on a simple principle: instead of using electricity to make wind—like a fan—wind turbines use wind to make electricity. Wind turns the propeller-like blades of a turbine around a rotor, which spins a generator, which creates electricity. Thanks to the hard-working team at Musselroe Windfarm for an amazing day. Pics of IdentiFlight construction, happy cows, Cape Barron geese near our turbines.
