Breaking barriers and winning medals! Stephen Nedoroscik, the U.S. men's gymnastics pommel horse specialist, helped end a 16-year medal drought with an incredible bronze medal performance. Last Monday, Nedoroscik nailed his routine without his glasses, relying on the feel and flow of his movements. “The thing about pommel horse is like you’re using your hands the whole time,” Nedeoroscik tells CNN. “You’re feeling how your center of mass sort of swivels around. I don’t see. I don’t need to see to see what I’m doing… I’m just doing it by how it feels.” Nedoroscik has strabismus, or misalignment of the eyes, and coloboma, a loss of tissue in a part of the eye. This fall, we're thrilled to kick off our Braille Challenge Writing Workshop for Braille Challenge students in grades 10-12. In this virtual eight week program, students will join a community of passionate braille readers to level up their writing skills. We offer two tracks: Academic and Creative Writing. Participants will learn directly from experts in the fields, collaborate with their peers, and renew their excitement for the famous six-dot system! In the Academic track, students will learn from researchers like Professor Simon Fischer-Baum. We’ll tackle personal statements, undergraduate admissions, accommodation requests, research, and more. In the Creative Writing track, led by an Antioch University Masters of Fine Arts candidate with experience writing different genres, students will be delving into everything from screenwriting to poetry. Students will develop their own unique writing voice, practice workshopping their pieces, and learn to bring their characters to life. To register, just complete this form: https://lnkd.in/g6Z-uz35 While the Writing Workshop is only open to Braille Challenge participants in grades 10-12, the survey is open to students in grades 7-12. By the way, participants who complete the survey by August 16th will be entered for a chance to win a $25 Amazon gift card! Thank you Courtney Ortiz AppleOne Employment Services for the breakfast goodies and your continued partnership in matching us with top-quality candidates for our organization's mission!
As a part of our Building Our Community initiative, we provided the opportunity to celebrate our best clients with a meal. Braille Institute of America has been a long-time client of AppleOne and I was lucky enough to go offer their staff breakfast this morning. I met some amazing people that we placed with the company many years ago. I am looking forward to many more years of partnerships to provide top-quality candidates for their organization to help support their mission.

Another wonderful Johnny Mercer Concert for the books! This year we had a special guest singer, our very own CEO Jim (Dimitri) Kales sang "One For My Baby (And One More For The Road)." Thank you to JOHNNY MERCER FOUNDATION for sponsoring this concert and giving our students a place to showcase their musical talents.
I'll be a sticking with my day job, but what fun to get to sing in our 25th Braille Institute of America Johnny Mercer Music Festival this week in Los Angeles. I sang "One for My Baby (And One More for the Road)", one of my favorite Sinatra songs (and written by the great Johnny Mercer). The Johnny Mercer Music Festival is a wonderful Braille Institute tradition, honoring the music of the late songwriter. Mercer wrote over 1,400 songs, wrote songs for 100 motion pictures, had 18 Oscar nominations, and was the co-founder and President of Capitol Records. His foundation, the Johnny Mercer Foundation, has generously supported Braille Institute through our Johnny Mercer Music Program, which helps children and adults who are blind or visually impaired to find their voices through musical instruction and performance. All elements of the program are FREE. Sandy Shin Charles Tigerman Gary Jimenez Brian Sheridan Jane S. Madalyn Spangler Michael Corley Lester Sussman Patricia Bramhall Alex Welter Lynn Sher
