Christiana mène ses recherches à Memorial University, Newfoundland and Labrador sous la direction du Dr Matthew Parson. Son projet se concentre sur la compréhension du rôle des récepteurs NMDA, un type de complexe protéique, dans la maladie de Huntington (MH). Introducing Christiana Kennedy, one of the 2024 Brain Canada Huntington Society of Canada Undergraduate Student Fellowship recipients! Christiana is conducting research at Memorial University, Newfoundland and Labrador under the guidance of Dr. Matthew Parson. Her project focuses on understanding the role of NMDA receptors, a type of protein complex, in Huntington’s disease (HD). Specifically, Christiana will explore how elevated levels of a subcomponent of the NMDA receptor make brain cells more susceptible to damage and death in HD. Her work aims to reveal potential new strategies for protecting brain cells and slowing the progression of the disease. Cet été, Isabel fait avancer ses recherches en tant qu'assistante de recherche au laboratoire Truant de l'Université McMaster. Son travail vise à comprendre comment les lésions de l'ADN sont réparées chez les patients atteints de la MH et à explorer des moyens potentiels d'améliorer ce processus pour développer de nouveaux traitements. Isabel's project investigates the interaction between N6FFA—a molecular tag crucial for DNA repair—and the huntingtin protein in Huntington’s disease (HD). This summer, Isabel is advancing her research as a research assistant in the Truant Lab at McMaster University. Her work aims to unravel how DNA damage is repaired in HD patients and explore potential ways to improve this process for developing new treatments. Nous sommes ravis de partager les travaux révolutionnaires de Corina Nagy, une Futur Leader, et son équipe du Douglas Research Centre | Centre de recherche. Corina Nagy et son équipe utilisent un modèle murin dit « des quatre génotypes » (FCG) afin de distinguer les effets des hormones gonadiques des contributions chromosomiques sous-jacentes. Cette approche leur permet d’observer les interactions entre les chromosomes sexuels et les hormones dans diverses combinaisons, mais aussi leurs effets sexospécifiques sur le cerveau. En fin de compte, Corina Nagy utilise le modèle murin FCG pour déterminer comment les hormones sexuelles et la génétique influencent la fonction des gènes et le développement du cerveau durant la puberté. « J’espère que cette recherche sensibilisera les gens au fait que se développer différemment signifie simplement de se développer différemment. We are thrilled to share the groundbreaking work of Dr. Corina Nagy, a Future Leader in Canadian Brain Research, and her team at the Douglas Research Centre | Centre de recherche. Dr. Nagy and her team are using a four-core genotype (FCG) mouse model, which allows them to decouple the effect of gonadal hormones from the underlying chromosomal contributions. This approach enables them to examine the interactions between sex chromosomes and hormones in various combinations and examine their sex-specific effects on the brain. Ultimately, Dr. Nagy is using the FCG mouse model to determine how sex hormones and genetics influence gene function and brain development during puberty. “I hope this research opens people’s eyes to the fact that developing differently is just that—developing differently.
