To stay competitive in the global economy, continuous innovation and a highly skilled workforce are essential, especially in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). In 2022, the national average wage for STEM jobs was $107,430, nearly double the $58,670 average for non-STEM jobs. STEM jobs are also growing faster, with employment increasing by 19.2% (1.5 million jobs) from May 2007 to May 2018, compared to a 6.6% growth in overall employment. In Kentucky, the number of science and engineering degrees per 1,000 individuals aged 20 to 24 increased from 8.1 in 1997 to 14.8 in 2022. However, this is still lower than competitor states (23.0) and the U.S. average (25.2) in 2022. Over the past 25 years, the U.S. saw a 131% increase in these degrees, competitor states saw a 115% increase, while Kentucky had an 82% increase.
