FOUNDER MOTIVATION "How do you frame the work you're doing around something that gives you purpose & gives you joy? …if you are [just focused on the outcome] and you don't enjoy the process, the math doesn't add up. It just does not make any sense… if you don't get energy from the process (the process is not rewarding on its own & you're just focused on the outcome) it's going to suck…" Pedro Franceschi, founder/CEO Brex (via Harry Stebbings, The Twenty Minute VC)

Startups and Strategic Partnerships at Brex | Prev a16z and SVB

Happy Friday! Here’s your 🤯 fun stat of the day: nearly 40% of startups fail because they run out of cash. Most traditional banking options are basically just a parking lot for a company's cash — charging high fees and offering low yield. So why isn’t startup banking better? That’s what we've aimed to fix with our newest update to how we approach startup banking, with our Brex business account.* We took the best things about checking, treasury, and FDIC insurance and combined them in one account — with no minimums, and yield earned instantly. Founders now get access to all of this immediately: 💰A Checking account that lets you automate bills and payments with ACH and checks — and send wires in over 40 currencies. 📈A Treasury account that lets you earn yield from your first dollar with no minimums — while still allowing you to access your funds anytime. 🏦A Vault account with up to $6M in FDIC coverage through 20+ program banks, and 24/7 support. This is startup banking built for founders, by founders and operators. Feel free to read more on how these updates are helping 1 in 3 US startups protect their cash and extend their runway here. *Brex is a financial technology company, not a bank. Checking accounts and banking services provided by Column N.A., Member FDIC. Treasury and Vault accounts are offered by Brex Treasury LLC, Member FINRA and SIPC. Brex Treasury is not a bank nor an investment adviser. Investing in securities involves risk. Yield is variable.

    Founder and CEO at Brex

Thanks to Harry Stebbings for having me on 20VC! In the episode, we discuss building Brex, the job of the CEO, how we’re helping customers make every dollar count, the advice I’d give myself if I had to start over—and lots more. I hope you enjoy!

Harry Stebbings Harry Stebbings is an Influencer

    Founder @ 20VC

I have interviewed 800 founders on 20VC. The single commonality of the best (Daniel Ek, Tobias Lütke) they all start entrepreneurial endeavours young. Pedro at just 15 scaled Pagar.me to 100 people & $1.5BN transactions. Today, he is CEO of Brex, a fricking monster that has raised $1.23BN and is valued at $12.3BN. My 7 lessons from Pedro Franceschi 👇 1. Too Many Founders Underestimate the Importance of Mental Health - I had severe paralyzing anxiety multiple times during 2021. - I was perfectly healthy but I couldn’t work properly from all the stress. - I was too harsh on myself - I had to learn to be kind. 2. The $10BN Company YC Almost Missed - We were doing VR back in 2017. - We met with YC & they hated our idea. - BUT they still invested because they liked the team. 3. What Makes The Truly Great CEOs - They have an unbelievably high degree of understanding what matters. - There are very few things that make a business work. - Great CEOs understand the bottlenecks & how to 100x the outcome. 4. Why Ramp's Product Marketing is Wrong and BS - No great company was built on savings. - Making every dollar count is what truly makes a difference. - Building a product around cutting vs. maximizing ROI is extremely different. 5. What Brex Needs to Do to be Public  - Being a public company is easy - being a low-volatility public company is hard. - We still do not have a high predictability in our business model. - This is our biggest bottleneck to go public. 6. Idea Generation is Underrated - If I were to write a book on how to build a company, there will be 2 parts: - Part 1 takes 6 months, part 2 takes 10 years - they are equally important. - First part is idea generation & too many founders overestimate the power of pivoting. 7. Why We’re Pro-Secondary - If money is going to take someone out of the game, do it early. - We made 3 tender offers since starting the company & nothing’s changed. - You have to treat liquidity as a part of life, not a one-time event like an IPO that suddenly makes everyone rich.
