"The world doesn’t need another Venture Fund." Last week, we had the privilege of hosting a workshop titled “Optimizing Pitch Decks for Emerging Managers,” conducted by the exceptional Charlotte Zhang from Inatai Foundation. As an LP who reviews hundreds of pitch decks monthly, each of the points she made was crucial. 💎 She stated: "The first argument that an LP will have in their mind is, why do we need another fund in this space? As long as you are able to articulate a deeper, more nuanced understanding of the market structure and what current investors are missing in terms of context to capture an overlooked opportunity that you're uniquely equipped to invest into, that should be relatively easy in terms of explaining your competitive positioning." Here are some other key takeaways: ✨ An articulation of your investment process is crucial. Highlight anything nuanced and unique to your tools, resources, and networks. Provide distinct and tangible examples of value-add. 💡 Just because an area is not crowded does not mean it's good. Dedicate time to explain what you see that others don't. There's a reason why certain areas attract more venture attention. 🔍 Having your team slide too far into the deck is a common mistake. Avoid setting unrealistic targets like a 10x step up in fund size for a fund one from the amount of capital you’ve historically invested. It raises questions about your discipline in deployment, implications for portfolio construction, and potential issues with adverse selection in trying to write much bigger checks. 📊 Every pitch deck should include at least one super compelling case study. During diligence, answer this: how many similar companies did you meet?
