Goli Darabi joined Dr. Rodney Falk, director of the Brigham’s Cardiac Amyloidosis Program, at the Sean McDonough Celebrity Golf Classic Draw Party on Sunday night at the Boston Harbor Hotel. Hosted by Sean and Erin McDonough, the event convenes sports and entertainment celebrities for a two-day event to benefit cardiac amyloidosis research at the Brigham. Goli shared the story of her care at the Brigham after years of debilitating symptoms and multiple syncope episodes. “Without Dr. Falk, I don’t think anybody would have been able to figure out what is wrong with me. I am blessed that I’m in remission, that Dr. Falk and his team have helped me have this gift of a normal life. Today, I’m able to walk on my own and take a deep breath and spend time with my loved one and family members.” Since 2018, the Sean McDonough Celebrity Golf Classic has raised $3 million for cardiac amyloidosis research. About us
Boston's Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) is an international leader in virtually every area of medicine and has been the site of pioneering breakthroughs that have improved lives around the world. A major teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School, BWH has a legacy of excellence that continues to grow. With two outstanding hospitals, over 150 outpatient practices, and over 1,200 physicians, we serve patients from New England, throughout the United States, and from 120 countries around the world. The BWH name is a reflection of our history. In 1980 three of Boston’s oldest and most prestigious Harvard Medical School teaching hospitals - the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, the Robert Breck Brigham Hospital, and the Boston Hospital for Women – merged to form Brigham and Women’s Hospital. As a national leader in improving health care quality and safety, we have helped to develop some of the industry’s best practices including computerized physician order entry (CPOE) to prevent medication errors. The CPOE is now a nationally-accepted safety practice. The BWH Biomedical Research Institute (BRI) is one of the most powerful biomedical research institutes in the world and the second largest recipient of National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding among independent hospitals in the United States. BWH has long had great success in research as measured by the number of important discoveries made, the size and scope of its research portfolio and the volume of publications annually. BWH is a training ground for physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals. We have 1,100 trainees in over 140 of the most sought after training programs in the world, and also host Harvard Medical School students in rotations throughout our programs. As our global health services expand, our clinical trainees have rich opportunities to contribute and learn in challenging environments around the world. Brigham researchers examined how income support impacted health outcomes and found that participants who received money had 27% fewer emergency room visits. “There’s this narrative out there that you give people cash and they spend it on drugs and alcohol. I think we’re one of the first studies to really rigorously and empirically show that’s not the case,” said co-author Sumit Agarwal, MD, a physician at the Brigham. Learn more about the study in this ABC News article:

Last Thursday, Boston City Councilor Enrique J. Pepén visited the Brigham to speak with 90 students enrolled in the Workforce Development Youth Summer Program as part of a Civic Engagement workshop. The City Councilor, a Boston native, shared about his journey into politics, how the healthcare and political worlds merge and the importance of remaining informed and aware. The Workforce Development Youth Summer Program hosts over 90 high school students each year from the City of Boston. The mission is to provide young people with summer employment, an opportunity to explore healthcare careers, build a pipeline of diverse health professionals, and give young people a safe and meaningful way to spend summer.

Mass General Brigham researchers have actually developed a new quiz you can take that can help predict your risk of all of those conditions, called the McCance Brain Care Score™. The quiz evaluates 12 modifiable physical, lifestyle and social factors that can help patients protect their brain health, and they have now shown that it can predict risk of late-age depression as well. Take the quiz and read more about the McCance Brain Care Score™: http://spklr.io/6049sM99 Mass General Brigham authors include Jonathan Rosand, MD, MSc, Sanjula Dhillon Singh, MD, PhD, MSc, and colleagues at the McCance Center for Brain Health at MGH, along with Christopher D. When Lindsey Ulin, MD, learned that her grandfather had a heart failure exacerbation in Louisiana during her first few days of residency, she knew that as the first person to work in healthcare in her family, she’d be fielding a lot of questions. As a Brigham trainee, Ulin knew of the HeartPal team. This innovative palliative care model improves the quality of life for patients by helping them treat their symptoms, understand their illness, and partner in making treatment decisions that align with what’s most important to them. With this in mind, Ulin encouraged her family to look into palliative care options in their home state. Ulin discusses how her intern year has led her to promote palliative care for others in this article:

On June 18th, at the Bornstein Ampitheater, 23 students graduated from the Brigham’s Student Success Job Program (SSJP), with U.S. Rep. Ayanna Pressley giving the event’s keynote address. The SSJP is a comprehensive program that helps students with the college application process, develop relationships with peers with similar goals, take on leadership positions in student groups, engage in educational and engaging monthly seminars, access tutoring in science and math, and apply for financial scholarships for college. Rep. Pressley encouraged students to find their purpose, remain authentic to themselves and never forget that they belong in every space! http://spklr.io/6046SsaC
