This is big. Brimstone was selected for a transformational $189 million investment by U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s Industrial Demonstration Program. No one knows more about decarbonizing our economy, or about what it will take to achieve global impact than DOE. By backing Brimstone’s commercial demonstration plant, the DOE has offered jet fuel to accelerate our scale-up and path to market. Since Day One, we’ve believed that decarbonizing cement requires developing a product identical to the industry-standard portland cement that builders everywhere know and trust. The process would need to be extremely low-carbon, and cost-competitive at full scale. DOE’s investment in Brimstone is a powerful validation of this approach and our work. After a highly competitive process, we’re thrilled to be among the 33 companies chosen to be part of the largest industrial decarbonization effort in U.S. history, one that will create clean jobs, transform sectors, and help spur an American-led clean industrial revolution. Let’s build. Decarbonizing cement—without changing the product or price
About us
Brimstone is on a mission to decarbonize the cement industry, which today is responsible for 7.5% of carbon emissions annually. Founded in 2019, Brimstone developed a breakthrough decarbonized process to produce the same ordinary portland cement and supplementary cementitious materials used today. These materials have the same quality and performance builders have trusted for decades — now with a positive climate impact.

Federal, state, and local governments are responsible for about HALF of the cement and concrete purchased in the U.S. Think sidewalks, bridges, and schools. Whether measured in volume consumed or dollars spent, no other consumer comes close to the government. That’s why a new bill making its way through Congress is so important. The bipartisan Impact Act 2.0 – sponsored by Reps. Valerie Foushee (D-North Carolina) and Max Miller (R-Ohio) – would boost the development and manufacturing of low-emissions cement, concrete and asphalt–most importantly through advance market commitments. This adds to a growing legislative drumbeat. Senator Christopher Coons (D-DE) and Senator Tillis (R-NC) introduced the pioneering “Concrete and Asphalt Innovation Act,” which would leverage the federal government’s unique role as the largest buyer in the country. These efforts set the stage for passing this important measure in the new Congress. Brimstone is proud to join with ClearPath Action, Inc., Clean Air Task Force, Center for Climate and Energy Solutions (C2ES), Ceres, Industrious Labs, Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), RMI, and others advocating for this important initiative.

Nothing like a sweltering summer to motivate climate action! ☀ Our VP of Policy and Public Affairs Simon G. Brandler recently attended a White House convening of leaders dedicated to decarbonizing the cement and concrete sector. The White House is taking the show on the road with a series of regional events on low-carbon concrete with the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), RMI, NRMCA Group and many others. Next stop: Los Angeles on Aug 27. Our very own Gabriel Gonzalez will be there with other West Coast leaders talking about new solutions and how to advance the clean industrial revolution. The world uses about 30 billion tons of concrete every year — more than any other material except water. It's the most ubiquitous human-made substance in the global economy. It’s also one of the planet's biggest climate challenges. Our founder Cody Finke, Ph.D. talked to Heatmap News' Shift Key podcast about why a solution to cement emissions is in reach and why Brimstone is going all in on decarbonizing ordinary portland cement (OPC). https://lnkd.in/gQzXTPen

"Brimstone’s R&D space looks like a chemistry lab crossed with a commercial kitchen and a very clean automotive garage. In the back, baseball-sized rocks are crushed in one machine, filtered in another, and further pulverized in a third." Thanks KALW for touring our Oakland lab and raising awareness about the big problem we're trying to solve! https://lnkd.in/g_sf6u-R

Our cofounder Hugo Leandri was delighted to accept the WORLD MATERIALS FORUM's Scale Up award in France on behalf of Brimstone 🏆 Each year, WMF recognizes businesses that have a sizable impact on the use of materials (smarter, less, and longer) and a demonstrated breakthrough with new materials or new processes. We are honored to be chosen by an expert jury for opening a critical pathway to decarbonize the cement industry. Below Hugo is pictured at the forum with Victoire de Margerie, the jury and Brimstone senior advisors Brett Olsher and Kevin Kramer.

Honored to be recognized by the World Economic Forum First Movers Coalition. Heating limestone accounts for 60% of cement’s carbon emissions. Our process replaces limestone with carbon-free calcium silicate rocks. Different process and materials, same final product – ordinary portland cement.
Cement and concrete production generates 7-8% of global CO2 #emissions. These innovators are working to reduce that. Our CEO Cody Finke, Ph.D. had an incredible week at #BESummit24 in London presenting on decarbonizing heavy industry and the future of net zero construction. He got to catch up with fellow concrete decarbonizer Robert Niven, CEO of CarbonCure Technologies. Prince William, who created the The Earthshot Prize, called attention to the pivotal role of innovators and entrepreneurs in tackling climate change. And Bill Gates reflected that the clean industrial revolution is here. Brimstone is proud to be part of it!

From ropes courses and bonfires to deep work sessions, we had a blast at our annual company offsite in beautiful Santa Rosa, CA! Brimstone employees gathered for a few days of sunshine, sports and team bonding. We’re on a mission to deeply decarbonize the built world, starting with cement and concrete - the second-most consumed material on earth. If you're feeling the pull to make a massive impact as a company and teammate, we’re hiring! https://lnkd.in/e5K2wYYt
