Think of those who may find fireworks and loud noises distressing by engaging in quieter activities such as waving flags or enjoying sparklers. You experience the world through the lenses of culture, ethnicity, and race. These factors, among others, profoundly affect mental health, especially for Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC). In BIPOC communities, discussing mental health can often be considered taboo, and certain myths about seeking mental health support persist. These messages often stem from genuine fear, as BIPOC populations may have had negative mental health and healthcare system experiences. As a result, BIPOC individuals have often sought support from traditional healers, doulas, or peer advocates. However, seeking therapy or other mental health services can support and supplement these methods. Here are some common myths you may encounter in BIPOC communities, along with the facts: ❌Myth: Talking about my feelings is a sign of weakness. ✔️Fact: Offering and receiving support is a crucial element in the natural cycle of life. ❌Myth: What happens in the family should stay in the family. ✔️Fact: You are allowed to express yourself to people you feel comfortable and safe with, even if they are not your biological family. ❌Myth: Therapy is for "crazy" people. ✔️Fact: Therapy provides a space for you to heal and grow so you can thrive. ❌Myth: Others had it worse, so I don’t have the right to feel how I do. ✔️Fact: Your feelings are valid, and you deserve care and support. We leave the 1970s and 1980s behind and enter the new millennium and beyond to explore Brook Lane's major transformations to further expand treatment and services in the 1990s and 2000s! ✨ NEW MILESTONES 🌟 In the 1990s, Brook Lane Health Services underwent several transformative developments. In 1992, an expansion to the Laurels building included an 8-bed wing for the child and adolescent hospital, along with a new administrative wing. The following year, Meadowbrook (now North Village) Outpatient offices opened near Maugansville, MD. In 1994, The Laurels underwent a significant change, converting from an outpatient services location to Laurel Hall School, initially catering to secondary students. By 1996, Laurel Hall School expanded its reach to include elementary school students. In 1997, the organization rebranded from Brook Lane Psychiatric Center to Brook Lane Health Services to better encompass its diverse range of programs and services. The late 1990s saw the establishment of a transitional care home for adolescents in 1998, strategically located where the current adult Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is housed. The decade concluded with the celebration of Brook Lane's 50th anniversary in 1999, marked by a weekend of festivities. EVOLUTION & EDUCATION 🎓 Moving into the 2000s, Brook Lane Health Services continued to evolve. In 2004, a substantial hospital expansion was completed, introducing single-occupancy rooms for all patients and creating distinct units for children, adolescents, and adults. The expansion marked a significant chapter in the organization's growth. In 2008, this expansion continued with the opening of a second Laurel Hall School location in Frederick, MD. #75years #BrookLane #History
