Free tools & data addressing embodied carbon emissions in the building industry. EC3/tally/openEPD/materials&ownersCAN
About us
BuildingTransparency.org’s core mission is to provide the open access data and tools necessary to enable broad and swift action across the building industry in addressing embodied carbon’s role in climate change. BuildingTransparency.org currently provides actionable information about embodied carbon in construction via the Embodied Carbon in Construction Calculator (EC3) tool. It provides services including : • Free, easy-to-use database(s) of construction materials and their environmental impacts, utilizing third party verified environmental product declaration (EPDs). • Ability to view and compare embodied carbon impacts of selected materials manufacturers and products based on your geography, performance requirements and materials selections • Free user interface and published methodology that enables clear, transparent embodied carbon limits and reductions to be set, achieved and reported • Security and confidentiality of proprietary and personal data • Transparent, open access software to be used to further supply chain market transformation, to the extent that is reasonable and prudent with respect to security, privacy, licenses, and other obligations. • Digital EPD integration to optimize and accelerate disclosure and reduction of material environmental impacts • User support for fast adoption and easy integration into existing AEC workflows, specifications and procurement documents.

Building Transparency believes in deep collaboration and mutually benefitial integrations within the growing embodied carbon data and tools ecosystem, and everything we do is in support of our mission to make embodied carbon data accessible and actionable. Please to point to another example of this, with Qualis Flow (Qflow)'s announcement of their integration with Building Transparency's EC3 tool. #ec3tool #embodiedcarbon #asbuilts #constructioncarbon #constructiontools #climatetools #climatedata #ecosystem

I'm very excited to for the release of the Google's 2024 Environmental Report. This year, we've made significant advancements in our sustainability efforts, including integrating AI to drive positive environmental change. Part of this journey is working to lower the #embodiedcarbon associated with #construction. With collaborators like Building Transparency and data center peers in the iMasons Climate Accord, we are working together to measure and reduce the environmental footprint of our #digitalinfrastructure. Happy to share this interim report on accounting for carbon uptake in Product Category Rules for cement-based products, which our very own Mikaela DeRousseau co-authored alongsite Pranav Pradeep Kumar, Ph.D., E.I.T., Hessam AzariJafari and Randolph Kirchain at MIT Concrete Sustainability Hub.
Written in collaboration with industry and other academic institutions, our new interim report proposes a framework to account for carbon uptake in Product Category Rules (PCRs) for creating EPDs for cement-based products (CBPs). Read the report: https://lnkd.in/eFjiYqfq Key takeaways: 💡 The proposed method elaborates the multi-level approach adopted to define carbon uptake estimation based on the information available to EPD producers and users. 💡 The report highlights the need for a probabilistic framework to account for uncertainties associated with the input data and modeling approach. 💡 The report also aims to provide guidelines for producers to incorporate carbon uptake estimates into EPDs based on end-use applications and create a baseline for a science-based and transparent method generalizable to other components of a CBP’s life cycle. Very exciting to see this coverage of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)’s work to drive purchase and procurement of low embodied carbon construction materials in Forbes: https://lnkd.in/gXWqubNK “Momentum is building for this public-private partnership. In November 2022, the EPA announced it is expanding its recommendation list to support federal sustainability goals, highlighting opportunities around climate change and safer chemicals. Early this year, with $100 million authorized by the Inflation Reduction Act, it launched a program to craft an ecolabel for construction materials with substantially lower embodied carbon than industry averages.” It is a great market signal when this type of news begins to go mainstream. #embodiedcarbon #markettransformation #epds #climatepolicy

We are excited to announce that pilot access to Building Transparency's EC3 tool is now available to individual users of the tool: https://www.ec3pilot.org/ Funds received through enabling this access go directly back into fulfilling our mission by further supporting development and testing for deployment of additional categores and features in the public version of EC3. Until today, pilot access and development support has been tied to corporate pilot partnerships. But with the increasing number of material categories now being curated within the EC3 tool - as well as the increasing number of EC3 "power users" suggesting and asking for additional functionality - the team felt the tool and the EC3 user community would both benefit from this decision to increase pilot user access. You can read more on the EC3 pilot landing page, as well as access a full list of FAQ's! #ec3tool #embodiedcarbon #constructioncarbon #epds #buyclean
