🚀 Houston, we have a reliability problem 🚀 🚨 Less than 20% of #menstrual tracking #apps accurately predict menses (Moglia, et. al, 2016). 🚨 Most free #menstrualhealth apps contain misleading information, and only FIVE PERCENT cite medical literature (Moglia, et. al, 2016). 🚨 Users rapidly abandon #femtech apps and products that don't provide accurate, reliable medical information (Jacobs and Evers, 2023). Don't get me wrong: I'm a huge proponent of #healthtech and femtech. I believe #digitalhealth products have massive potential to improve the wellness of people of all genders. I know from personal experience that #founders in this space are motivated, passionate changemakers who want to make #womenshealthcare and #lgbtqhealthcare better. Unfortunately, if the market is saturated by apps and products that provide misleading, inaccurate medical information, the #femtech industry may unintentionally create more harm than help. Scarleteen is a grassroots, queer, feminist organization dedicated to providing real-world #sexed to teens and emerging adults. For the final piece, I interviewed Heather Russell, LPC, about her experiences working with survivors of #sexualtrauma in her #counseling practice. We discussed the connections between mind and body and how physical concerns can influence mental health (and vice versa). ✨ It's that time again: it's One to Watch Wednesday! ✨ This week, we're talking #abortion care. It's been a big week for #reproductiverights in the United States...and not in a good way. The attorney general of Texas forced a pregnant woman with a non-viable pregnancy to flee her home state for medically necessary abortion care. The U.S. Supreme Court announced it would hear the case against #mifepristone, one of two pharmaceuticals used in medication abortion. If SCOTUS upholds the lower court's decision, mifepristone will become even less accessible to the people who need it. Medication abortion now accounts for more than half of all abortions in the United States (Guttmacher Institute). Since the Supreme Court ruled to rescind the constitutional right to abortion, more and more people are turning to medication abortion providers for help. Medication abortion with the combined regime of mifepristone and #misoprostol is effective in 99.6% of cases. Side effects are generally rare and mild (Ireland, et al., 2015). With the proper screening, prescription, and education, patients seeking a medication abortion can self-administer the medications in their own homes. Today's One to Watch took note of these statistics and saw an opportunity. Hey Jane was launched to provide patients in need with access to #telemedicine abortion (teleMAB). 📱 Hey Jane's care model allows for video or audio clinical encounters and asynchronous communication via a HIPAA-compliant app. 👩⚕️ Advanced practice clinicians screen patients to ensure safety and appropriateness for medication abortion. 👩🏫 Clinicians provide education and advice throughout each patient's abortion journey, and they can refer patients to in-person care when indicated. Hey Jane also provides #birthcontrol and emergency contraception options. They have recently expanded services to cover common #vaginalhealth concerns, including treatment for urinary tract and yeast infections and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). These services will be increasingly crucial in restrictive states suffering from a dearth of reproductive health providers (Sagar, et al., 2023). Since their launch, Hey Jane has helped tens of thousands of people receive care for #reproductivehealth and gynecological concerns. In a political climate that is progressively restricting access to critical healthcare, Hey Jane is helping all women and people with uteruses receive the care they need. 👀 Welcome to the very first "Ones to Watch Wednesday"! 👀 This week, I've been researching and thinking a lot about #endometriosis, so it's a perfect opportunity to highlight a #femtech company focused on exactly that. Today's feature is Hera Biotech, a woman-led #startup that aims to change the way we diagnose and stage endometriosis. ♀ Endometriosis affects an estimated 10% of reproductive-aged #womxn and people with uteruses (Pascoal, 2022). It can cause #chronicpain, bladder and bowel symptoms, sexual dysfunction, and problems with fertility. 🔪 Currently, laparoscopic surgery is the only "definitive" method to diagnose endo: by directly visualizing the patient's internal organs, a surgeon attempts to visualize the lesions that characterize many (but not all) types of endometriosis. Even then, surgery fails to "catch" endo in a subset of patients (Gratton, 2022). ⏳ The cost, risks, and wait times connected to surgery result in long delays in diagnosis and treatment for many people with endo. This leads many to suffer for years with pain and other symptoms; an estimated 30-50% of people with endo also experience impaired fertility (Filip, 2020). 💉 Hera's team has developed a biomarker-based test that directly examines the lining of the uterus (the endometrium). By assessing the tissue in which endometriosis is thought to originate, they're hoping to remove the guesswork associated with #biomarker testing from blood and saliva samples. Decreasing the need for surgical diagnosis of endo could reduce protracted wait times for diagnosis and treatment of the condition. The potential impacts on quality of life, #painmanagement, and #fertility would be profound.
