Improving California's health care system, so it works for all Californians.
About us
The California Health Care Foundation (CHCF) is dedicated to advancing meaningful, measurable improvements in the way the health care delivery system provides care to the people of California, particularly those with low incomes and those whose needs are not well served by the status quo. We work to ensure that people have access to the care they need, when they need it, at a price they can afford. CHCF informs policymakers and industry leaders, invests in ideas and innovations, and connects with changemakers to create a more responsive, patient-centered health care system. This fellowship will help shine a light on the critically underserved Californians in the San Joaquin Valley. We're extremely proud to support this incredible work!
Director Institute for Media & Public Trust at Fresno State, former Executive Editor of Fresno Bee, consults for legacy & start-up newsrooms.
It is my pleasure to announce that we have created a fulltime Health Care Reporting Fellowship in California's San Joaquin Valley. In a partnership between the Institute for Media and Public Trust at California State University, Fresno, and the Central Valley Journalism Collaborative, this fellowship will allow a reporter to take a deep dive into the health challenges faced by the region's underserved population. We believe it is crucial to have a fulltime reporter devoted to covering health issues in the Valley. The fellowship will allow the reporter to become an expert on health issues, and bring news consumers stories that currently go uncovered because of diminished resources in many local newsrooms. The best part is that a Fresno State student journalist will work with the reporting fellow as a research assistant. This student connection will enhance the health fellow's reporting while providing mentorship and training to develop the next generation of local journalists. We are looking for a mid-career journalist to be our first reporting fellow. The reporting fellowship is funded for four years through generous grants from the Institute for Media and Public Trust, the California Health Care Foundation, The California Endowment, and the The James B. McClatchy Foundation. All content generated by the health reporting fellowship will be available to all news sites in the region at no cost. "We are pleased to partner with the Fresno State’s Institute for Media and Public Trust to elevate critical health care stories impacting the Central Valley, said Alma Martinez, executive director of CVJC. "This fellowship will enable us to produce in-depth health care access and systems reporting that will elevate the unique health challenges faced by our community, while also fostering the development of future journalists." Joe Kieta, executive editor of CVJC, stressed the collaborative nature of the fellowship. “By involving a student journalist, we are not only enhancing the depth of our reporting but also mentoring the next generation of journalists. This fellowship will produce valuable and insightful journalism that resonates with our diverse Valley communities.”

Excited to share a new supplement from the American Journal of Public Health focusing on Latino/x health—a critical area for the California Health Care Foundation (CHCF). As a native-born Latina, like most in our growing diverse community, I see firsthand the importance of understanding that unique health care experiences and the cultural factors shaping Latino/x health. Let's prioritize these needs to ensure better health outcomes for all. Shout out to Melody Esther Tulier DrPH, MPH, MCP for leading this conversation at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. #LatinoHealth #PublicHealth https://lnkd.in/gfu8W-X4

🏥 Nonprofit Hospitals and Community Benefit: A Landscape Review🏥 New report from CHCF sheds light on community benefit spending by California's nonprofit hospitals. Key findings: 🔹 $8.7 billion spent on community benefit activities in 2020 🔹 92% of hospitals list access to care as a top priority 🔹 Estimated $2.6–$2.8 billion in tax exemptions (potentially higher) But the big question remains: Is the impact commensurate with the tax benefit? The report reveals: 🔸 Divided stakeholder opinions on community benefit impact 🔸 Lack of public data on tax exemption value 🔸 Potential misalignment between spending and community needs It's time for a discussion on maximizing the impact of community benefit programs. Let's ensure these resources truly serve our communities. Homelessness has devastating consequences for health and well-being. Despite these high risks, there is little known about pregnancy among people experiencing homelessness. To better understand pregnancy and homelessness, we examined findings from the California Statewide Study of People Experiencing Homelessness (#CASPEH). Our new topic brief reviews: ➡️ Who experiences pregnancy during homelessness ➡️ How they lost their housing ➡️ Their experiences during homelessness ➡️ Barriers to regaining housing The findings highlight the urgent need for the homelessness system to advance evidence-based strategies to meet the needs of pregnant people.
