On August 16, we hosted an expert briefing that offered high-level science perspectives on ocean noise with a focus on implications for California’s ocean and coastal environment. Speakers included Dr. Simone Baumann-Pickering of Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Dr. Lindsey Peavey Reeves of NOAA's Office of National Marine Sanctuaries, Dr. John Ryan of Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, and Vanessa ZoBell, PhD of Scripps Institution of Oceanography. In partnership with the HUMBOLDT BAY HARBOR RECREATION CONSERVATION DISTRICT, Cal Poly Humboldt, Sunken Seaweed, Llc, and Hog Island Oyster Co., we recently hosted a legislative tour of seaweed aquaculture facilities in Humboldt Bay. The tour was co-sponsored by State Senator Mike McGuire and Assemblymember Jim Wood. The event featured tours of an open-ocean seaweed farm, and a land-based hatchery and seaweed farm, and a roundtable discussion with local seaweed aquaculture experts. These initiatives, born from our 2023 RFP, focus on the identification, analysis, and communication of Indigenous Knowledge.
