We're a passionate, mission-driven health center working towards health justice for LGBTQ+ communities.

About us

Callen-Lorde is the global leader in LGBTQ+ healthcare. Since the days of Stonewall, we have been transforming lives in LGBTQ+ communities through excellent comprehensive care, provided free of judgment and regardless of ability to pay. In addition, we are continuously pioneering research, advocacy and education to drive positive change around the world, because we believe healthcare is a human right. Callen-Lorde’s grassroots heritage dates back over 50 years to the St. Marks Clinic and the Gay Men’s Health Project – two volunteer-based clinics that provided safe and confidential sexual health and primary care regardless of ability to pay. These clinics merged in 1983 to form Community Health Project, a mostly volunteer-staffed, episodic care program housing the nation’s first community-based HIV clinic.

  • Wrapping up National Health Center Week #NCHW24 and it's staff appreciation day! These people are hard-working, compassionate, and knowledgeable. Here’s some praise for the Callen-Lorde staff, directly from the people they serve. “During my recent visit, I went in for a routine STI panel, but Addison, the case manager, noticed I was experiencing back pain. Without hesitation, they arranged for me to see a doctor on the same day. I met with Zil, who treated me with utmost politeness and professionalism. She took the time to explain the potential occupational hazards that could be causing my back pain and offered valuable advice on how to alleviate it. It was such a relief to be seen as more than just a walking, talking STI.” - Victoria V. “Callen-Lorde's extensive and diverse staff is very knowledgeable, welcoming, kind, discreet, and focused on treating everyone equally, and with great respect and kindness.” - William D. “Dr. Cheryl Ayres was SO easy to talk to, made me feel so at ease, and I 110% recommend her!!” - Pia V. “I have been a patient of Dr. Eunmee Chun and Callen Lorde for many years. Dr. Chun is the smartest, most thorough doctor I have ever had. I am so grateful to have her and this service available to me.” - Maria G. “I am thankful for the friendly faces at the front desk. I am thankful for the staff that makes me feel at ease, given that I’m notoriously afraid of doctors. I am thankful for the doctors who actually listen, and provide the wonderful opposite of the homophobic healthcare I’m used to.” - Nicholas D.

  • Despite how common it is, there is little long-term research on bottom growth on T. This makes medically informed information about bottom growth difficult to access for many trans people who are thinking about taking testosterone, which has allowed inaccurate and often transphobic takes on bottom growth to proliferate online. Chance Krempasky, the Associate Director of Medicine-Education of Callen-Lorde, contributed to this article.

  • Callen-Lorde recently partnered with Bernie Wagenblast, the MTA, the NYC LGBT Historic Sites Project, and Area 23 on the InTransit Campaign. We were honored to be part of this creative and engaging campaign that uplifts the experiences of trans New Yorkers for International Transgender Day of Visibility. The campaign was recently awarded two Gold Lions at the Cannes Lions Festival of Creativity. As our CEO Patrick McGovern said at the time of the campaign’s launch: “The resilience of the trans community has paved the way for LGBTQ+ rights across the country, and their stories deserve to be amplified and celebrated. At a time when LGBTQ+ healthcare is under attack, Callen-Lorde is proud to serve as a safe haven for queer and trans people who need knowledgeable and welcoming healthcare–as we have for more than 55 years.” Watch this video and visit the website to learn more: https://www.intransit.nyc/
