Guiding refugees and immigrants in the journey toward self-determination and social equality.
About us
CAPI USA, originally called The Centre for Asian and Pacific Islanders was founded in 1982 by a coalition of church groups helping refugees arriving from Southeast Asia in the aftermath of the Vietnam conflict. Since then our services have expanded towards refugees and immigrants arriving from East Africa, Nepal, Burma, and many other countries around the world. We exist to guide refugees and immigrants in their journey toward self-determination and social equality with assistance from a diverse, multi-lingual and caring staff committed to holistic, affirming services to help people of all nationalities adapt, lead successful and productive lives, and give back to our Twin Cities regional community.

Thankful for the support and partnership of The Minneapolis Foundation. Democracy matters and we are ready for the work ahead!
We believe that communities are stronger when everyone participates in our democracy. Building on our longtime commitment to nurturing civic engagement, we recently awarded $500,000 in grants to nine nonprofits that are doing nonpartisan outreach to help ensure that all Minnesota voters have the resources they need to learn about the issues and head to the polls this fall. We're proud to partner with these community organizations! (ACER inc.) We had such a great time at CAPI's Digging Deep event last week! Thank you to everyone who came out to support our vision for creating a welcoming place for all, who believe in the power of transformation, and who believe in what we can do together. As we heard at the event, "CAPI's work is about turning newcomers hopes into realities, and in the process gives us all hope for the future." Be a force of good and help us get closer to the finish line! Donate today! Make a donation: https://lnkd.in/gv5sg3z

Many kids who regularly rely on school meals may feel especially anxious during the summer months. According to the Urban Institute in 2023, "Families who were already facing food hardship were most likely to take on debt to pay for groceries, which could leave them less able to meet their basic needs in the future." The Open Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless Summer Challenge is the perfect opportunity to come alongside the community. Your donation to CAPI's food shelf helps us purchase healthy, culturally-specific foods that turn into nutritious meals and full pantries. Donate during the month of July and double your impact! CAPI remembers our good friend Bob Frawley. Bob was a pillar at CAPI for decades, advocating and writing grants to help boost CAPI programming. He was not only active outdoors, but active in the community and in his ardent support of immigrant organizations and communities in the Twin Cities. His friendship and spirit will be missed. To Maggie and family, our hearts continue to be with you. Bob has left a lasting impact on us all.

🎉 Congrats to our CEO Mary Niedermeyer for being appointed to the Governor’s Workforce Development Board! 🎉
It’s an honor to be appointed by the Office of Governor Tim Walz & Lt. Governor Peggy Flanagan to join the Governor’s Workforce Development Board as a Community-Based Organization Representative. The purpose of the Governor’s Workforce Development Board (GWDB) is to advise the Governor on Minnesota’s statewide workforce system. The Board represents key leaders from business, education, labor, community-based organizations, and government. I look forward to all that we can accomplish over the next years together and aim to elevate the many unique opportunities and challenges immigrant and refugee communities face in today’s workforce.
