Heart disease continues to be a leading cause of death in the U.S., claiming the lives of nearly 700,000 Americans each year. Although many cardiovascular treatments have improved and become less invasive, there are still procedures that need improvements. Innovation in this space continues to unfold, promising even better outcomes, faster recovery, and less invasive procedures. In this LSI USA ‘24 panel, we heard from innovators who are building in this space, and the strategics and investors who have dedicated decades to advancing this field. Together they share recent advances, emerging trends, and the investment landscape fueling these innovations. Featured Panelists: • JD Friedland (Moderator), Managing Director, Ventures, Cleveland ClinicMaggie Nixon, CEO, Capstan MedicalDonald E Bobo Jr, Corporate VP, Edwards LifesciencesJacques Essinger, CEO, Polares MedicalWilliam Phillips, Founder & Managing Partner, Alruna Advisors The full panel, “Structural Heart Innovation in Medtech's Era of Change” is available on our website and YouTube channel.

Society of Robotic Surgery | SRS  Final day I made it to the last day of SRS this year and stayed on for the morning plenary session and am really pleased that I did . The session started with Cadiac. A panel of cardiac surgeons and interventional cardiologisyts talking about robotic development in the field that is still the largest cause of death in the US. It is also the area where robotics is least penetrated. I was Impressed by the Capstan Medical presentation on robotic delivery for mitral and triscupid valve treatmenr. I am not surprised as Maggie Nixon and Amy Kerdok are involved. Two of many engineers I respected at Intuitive. Clinical engineering is a critical competency for any company that is serious in robotics. Sudhir Srivastava, MD one of the early pioneers of cardiac surgery was able to present over 100 cases done on the Mantra System developed by his company SS Innovations. MicroPort continued to show faith in robotic vascular catheterization linked to telesurgery. Intuitive were very thoughtful and respectful when questioned by T. Sloane Guy Guy on why there had been no significant investment in cardiac since 2016 . Lastly Rob ‘E are developing a robotic echocardiography system as the demand is increasing, there are labour shortages existing because a typical echo technician is potentially exposed to five times the radiation of intervenitonalists. Following panels were picking up earlier themes of the AI and Telesurgery but perhaps being discussed at a higher level. A great presentation from Andor Health who has been installing Ai in Hospitals but primarily aimed at reducing the administrative burden on medical staff.  The argument was why spend $21 an hour on a physical nurse when you could deliver an equivalent service with additional AI support for $8 an hour via a virtual nurse. NVIDIA presented the hardware and software architecture they believe is needed if the potential of AI is going to be realized. Arguing that without a similar foundation the PC or smart phone revolutions would not have taken place.  Ericsson started to explain the benefits of 6G. During one of the discussions a hospital administrator talked about the reality of running a multi hospital network. One of his problems was staff retention and burn out as many were also being swamped with too much technology. Investing in these initiatives would mean moving from an opex business to a capex business. A really good meeting. I understand more than 40 different robotic companies presented and around 1,700 attendees. There was not one bad session that I went to. I learnt something new on AI in the Hernia session and in the Urology session comparative papers between Da Vinci and 5 new systems were presented. My only complaint, some of the session I wanted to attend ran in parallel. Congratulations to Vipul Patel, M.D., F.A.C.S.,SHARONA B. ROSS MD FACS, Martin Martino MD, MBA, Eduardo Parra Davila on such a strong agenda for the whole meeting..

Day One in the books for #SRS2024. Outstanding day. Steve Bell opened up and shared his thoughts and insights that was based on evidence and trends as to where the surgical robotic market in heading. Dave Rosa from Intuitive as usual was insightful, candid and transparent. As transparent as a publicly traded company can be. Refreshing, given some of the other circle-talking that occurs from other public companies that are here. The investor panel is always enlightening. As well as revealing as to what are the investors NOT talking about. I was surprised that no time was given to the rapidly changing centers of care and how that will greatly influence the entire market from form factors, pricing, investments, sales forces, etc. The debate around the details of the path over the period of the next 2-5 years would be fair. - Do 30%? 50%? 75% of procedures convert to robotics? - What verticals will emerge and adopt at a greater rate than others? - What companies will lead in each category? - Where will the procedures take place? - What does the pricing model look like? - Are the systems straight up purchased? Price per Procedure? Surgery as a Service? Debate away But stepping out over the next 15-20 years, those debate points become irrelevant and moot. Surgical robotics will be the rule and not the exception. The definition of "surgical robotics" will also evolve. A finer stratification of robots, patient selection, sites of care will create great companies and careers. Companies that are not even born yet will likely dominate a good number percentage of surgical robotic verticals. Dragonfly - A TMG Company had our full field studio on site, right in the middle of the mosh pit. Thanks to Maggie Nixon from Capstan Medical Pedro Costa from Interventional Systems Scott Huennekens and Ben Lundgren from On Target Laboratories And to Anne Osdoit and Jeffery Alvarez from Moon Surgical for the reveal of the Maestro on Wheels ribbon cutting. See you at Day 2.
