Harnessing the power of the ocean to heal the climate.
About us
The ocean is an immensely powerful force of nature, and our greatest ally to reverse the tides on climate change. By studying the planet’s natural cycles, Captura designed a solution that removes CO2 from the ocean and harnesses its ability to heal the climate—a process known as Direct Ocean Capture. Developed and proven in Caltech’s laboratories, our unique Direct Ocean Capture technology runs with just two ingredients: seawater and renewable electricity. It extracts CO2 directly from seawater to be permanently stored or reused. This amplifies the natural equilibrium between the ocean and atmosphere, drawing carbon out of the air and into the ocean to rebalance. Captura’s approach requires no rare-Earth minerals, adds nothing to the ocean, and leaves no chemicals behind. It’s a low-cost, large-scale carbon removal solution that is environmentally sound.

Its all about SCALE. The need for carbon dioxide removal (CDR) is going to be so large that solutions must be able to address how they can achieve sustainable, affordable, large-scale deployment. At Captura everything we do is focused on SCALE: -> Leverage the enormous, existing ocean for CO2 drawdown -> High performance proprietary electrodialysis with lower energy use -> Low pressure drop to minimize water pumping needs -> No added materials or chemicals -> No by-products to dispose of -> Nothing added into the ocean -> Designed to operate with intermittent and off-peak renewable energy to reduce energy-use conflict -> Measurable stream of CO2 for sequestration or utilization Direct Ocean Capture (DOC) is a relatively new concept though so we wanted to provide some insight into why we believe this is a solution that can scale and be cost effective. Take a look at the paper below to learn more. #carbonremoval #directoceancapture
As a #CarbonDioxideRemoval (CDR) technology provider, one of the first questions we are often asked is: what does it cost? Given its importance to policy and investment, understanding the potential cost of CDR technologies is critical for the growth and success of the industry. Today, we are pleased to share our new white paper detailing Captura’s innovations and cost reductions in #DirectOceanCapture (DOC). Noting that many are working to advance knowledge of CDR costs, our paper contributes to efforts to understand the cost of DOC by sharing new insight into Captura’s process. The paper explores our technology roadmap and proprietary innovations that will move our technology down the cost curve, including advancements in electrodialysis, gas extraction, and energy use. Through a comparison with prior academic studies, it offers a fresh perspective on the potential cost of DOC that is significantly lower than previous estimates and highly competitive with other high-integrity CDR technologies.
