🌾 A new study has demonstrated that crop yield failures can be predicted more than six months ahead of time and – in certain cases – before a crop is even planted. Given the considerable logistical challenges of responding to food insecurity, predicting low yields this far in advance could be a valuable tool for helping to alleviate the impacts of crop failures. 🔎 The predictions are based on existing forecasts of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), a large-scale mode of climate variability that influences global patterns of temperature and rainfall. 🌍 Just 15 countries are responsible for 98% of new coal-power development globally, with China 🇨🇳 and India 🇮🇳 alone driving 86% of this expansion. In our latest guest post for Carbon Brief, we draw on insights from the Global Coal Plant Tracker (GCPT) and broader energy trends to highlight the key factors fueling continued coal growth and its implications for the global energy transition. A huge thanks to GEM’s expert team—Lucy Hummer, Jeanette Lim, Jelena Babajeva, CFA, Claire Pitre, and Xing Zhang—for their invaluable work on this analysis! 👏 https://lnkd.in/d8ZjhPf4

New research reveals a concerning surge in atmospheric methane levels. Compared to CO2, methane is trapping around 80 times more heat over a 20-year period. Dr Paul Balcombe emphasises the importance of understanding emissions for the oil and gas sector. He states, "Almost every possible emission source is possible to eliminate, but [companies] have to know about it, improve the design or operation of [their] equipment and work with [those] who are on the plant to understand that methane emissions and safety [are] a priority." Read the full Q&A by Carbon Brief, shedding light on the causes, consequences, and potential solutions to this alarming trend, here: https://lnkd.in/etpg28ek #ClimateChange #Methane #GreenhouseGases #ClimateAction QMUL School of Engineering and Materials Science

These five charts show how climate change can impact food production and price in different areas 1️⃣ In Europe, extreme heat has impacted the cost of food, contributing to food inflation. 2️⃣ High rainfall levels in the 🇬🇧UK left soils waterlogged, affecting crop planting times. 3️⃣ In the 🇺🇸US, diseases and extreme weather have contributed to the steady rise in the prices of orange juice. 4️⃣ Global olive production has dropped significantly since 2021, partly as a result of drought events in the Mediterranean. 5️⃣ Heat, drought, cold and other forms of extreme weather have negatively impacted rice yields in 🇨🇳China. In order to gauge the climate & energy policies on offer in the US election, I read through the interviews and speeches given by Donald Trump and Kamala Harris so you don't have to. We've made a handy interactive table so you can compare them on everything from oil to energy bills. Trump wants to "drill, baby, drill" and says he will cut energy prices in half using the “liquid gold under our feet", while also terminating the “green new scam” (whatever that is). Harris has been relatively quiet on climate and energy since the start of her campaign for the presidency. However, she has said she will continue the Biden administration's climate programme and has previously recognised climate change as an “existential threat”. ➡️ buff.ly/47eKjMw
