Pleasure to be speaking on this panel on "Forecasting the Future for #US -#Taiwan Economic Cooperation" hosted by Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. New administrations in Taiwan and the United States offer an opportunity to broaden economic and technological cooperation. Washington and Taipei have struggled to agree on and sign a bilateral trade agreement, but they pursued market opening and an array of technology-related collaboration initiatives. In a virtual event on September 4, experts will cover how the U.S. and Taiwan can expand cooperation between governments, firms, and innovators. Joined by Evan A. FeigenbaumVice President for Studies, Acting Director, Carnegie China, Erin Murphy senior fellow for the Asia Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) and Dr. Tain-Jy Chen former Minister of National Development Council Taiwan Registration link: https://lnkd.in/gh7ihe28 https://lnkd.in/g8yzBFPu

Washington and Taipei have long struggled to agree on and sign a bilateral trade agreement, but they have pursued market opening and an array of technology-related collaboration initiatives. Soon, new administrations in Taiwan and the United States offer an opportunity to broaden economic and technological cooperation. What is the future of their economic cooperation? Join Evan A. Feigenbaum on Sept. 4 at 9 a.m. as he moderates an expert panel discussion to explore this new horizon, featuring Tain-Jy Chen of the Taipei School of Economics and Political Science, Jason Hsu of the Hudson Institute, and Erin L. New research posted today for Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, just in time for peak hurricane season. The federal government spends a lot of $$$ on disaster recovery, but a lot of it is invisible. The Disaster Dollar Database helps us see where money is going, and hopefully imagine what it could be used for. https://lnkd.in/edysuzYV The US is cruising toward a climate-driven insurance/property value crisis, especially in coastal areas. Are we preparing for the crisis? The database looks at the amount of reactive funding the federal government is *already* spending to absorb the uninsured costs of disaster shocks, through FEMA and HUD. We spent 6 months combing through federal register notices and FOIA requests to collect all this data in one place, so we can see what kind of money is getting spent for different kinds of disasters around the country. I’m fascinated by disasters (heck, I lived through two while I was finishing the research) and it’s a joy to do this work at Carnegie, with the help of amazing junior fellows, Dan Helmeci and Emily Hardy and support from Noah J. Gordon & Daniel Baer. Thanks also to Chrishelle Palay, Maddie Sloan, & Amanda Devecka-Rinear for early feedback about how this could be used in a practical context by disaster survivors. 💕
