Two months ago, I opened Catalyst Miami's Be the Catalyst Summit by reflecting on the history of the land we gathered on. Just blocks from our venue at the Wolfson campus of Miami Dade College, archaeologists in 2023 uncovered remnants of an ancient civilization predating the Egyptian pyramids. This area was an important trading post for the Tequesta peoples, our predecessors who lived and loved this land and water that we call South Florida for thousands of years. After the Tequesta peoples, this land was home to the Seminoles and Miccosukees, who were driven here after threatening the slave economy of the South with their offers of safe haven for African-descendants, escaped slaves, and freemen, known as the Black Seminoles. Miami too was an important stop on the underground railroad for slaves too far in the deep south to dare venturing north. We sat 3 blocks from Flagler's railroad, around which Bahamians and African-Americans built Miami's vibrant and beautiful communities. Just about a mile away in Overtown, Harlem of the South, where in the face of Jim Crow laws, when it was illegal for Blacks to be on Miami Beach after sundown, Black Miami created a thriving and world famous music, arts, and business community. I shared this very much abbreviated history then and with you now for two reasons. 1) It's important to remember that when it comes to the darkest times in history our ancestors and predecessors here in South Florida always found a way to do things differently. Miami is a place where we have always built what we needed because no one is coming. When times get hard and challenges feel daunting, I get a lot of strength and joy from understanding and being able to carry on this legacy with all of you. 2) As we forge ahead, we must also protect our heritage. The construction of luxury condos atop that Tequesta archeological site reminds us that "progress" is too easily made at the expense of our history and legacy. So, how do we protect that legacy and history? How do we honor our ecology and the people that came before us as we move forward with solutions to address Miami's most critical challenges? Throughout the day we heard from experts and leaders from across the country who inspired us to keep working on these questions. The answers will be embodied in our work with our partners as we implement the ideas shared at the summit. I'm proud to be part of Miami's legacy with you all of doing things differently and look forward to exploring those partnerships and solutions more!
