What a great day working with youth-serving organizations and agencies to host The Center at Sierra Health Foundation for a day in El Centro! Along with Imperial Valley Wellness Foundation and others, Catalyst CEO Megan Thomas and Imperial Valley Program Manager Maria Peinado, MPA started the day at Imperial Valley College's tiny home student housing community, Lotus Living. We then had lunch and a roundtable discussion on housing, mentorship, employment, and substance use disorders. In the afternoon, we gathered at Rite Track to learn about the Elevate Youth grant opportunity for programs in which youth ages 12-26 years lead policy, system, or environmental change (due Sept 2024: https://lnkd.in/gtSupgHh) and a capacity building grant opportunity, coming online in 2025. #imperialvalley #imperialcounty

Honoring a Legacy of Leadership: Celebrating Steve Eldred 🎉 🎉 🎉 We send our congratulations to Steve Eldred who, after an illustrious career at The California Endowment, will soon have all the time in the world for hobbies and family as he is retiring on September 5, 2024. Since joining the Endowment’s San Diego regional office in 2001, Steve has held many programmatic and leadership roles, including serving as a program officer for community health in the San Diego/Orange County border region, senior program manager for Building Healthy Communities in the City Heights neighborhood in central San Diego, and most recently as managing director for the Endowment’s South Region and statewide health teams. We were lucky to have had Steve’s leadership at Catalyst as well, as he served as board chair and co-founded the Social Equity Collaborative Fund and Coming Home to Stay prison reentry workgroup. Steve is a tenacious and dedicated leader, full of humor and goodwill, with a remarkable ability to connect with many people in service of health, justice, and belonging. Steve will leave a lasting legacy through his commitment to social justice, and we send him our good wishes for a wonderful future! If you would like to share your own happy retirement message to Steve, please submit a video message by Friday, September 20th, here: https://lnkd.in/gmqdyDSG #happyretirement #philanthropyleaders #sandiego #sandiegoleaders

In the news 🗞 The Joe & Vi Jacobs Center building will be sold to San Ysidro Health, paving the way for improved local health services for Southeastern San Diego residents. The new owners are committed to continuing to address the needs of the community through expanded services including a new health hub featuring much-needed medical services, such as after-hours urgent care and all-inclusive care program for elderly community members. The building, run by Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation (JCNI), has supported Southeastern San Diego for over two decades through an array of wraparound services, including a vaccination center, food distribution, and a business accelerator program. Through the continued operation of the JCNI in a new location at Market Creek Plaza, the Jacobs Family Foundation, Board, and JCNI team "remain committed to its mission of empowering communities through sustainable development and inclusive growth." https://lnkd.in/gMRfKbTM

We gathered arts funders and artists from across San Diego for an open and honest discussion about the evolving needs and work of our creative community. Over breakfast at the historic Clementine McDuff Elks Lodge, artists shared their experiences, shedding light on how San Diego's creative ecosystem supports them—and where it falls short. Together we also explored exciting projects and opportunities on the horizon. These are just a few of the big ideas from our conversation: 💡 Geographic eligibility for funding can be confusing because artists often live, work, exhibit, and serve in multiple places across the region. 💡 Arts spaces are often not exclusively nonprofits, but nonetheless serve as community hubs. 💡 San Diego can learn from funding models that exist in other places to create employment (e.g., artists-in-residence), stability (e.g., insurance pools), and community (shared artist-owned spaces). 💡 Arts and culture is not only aesthetic, but a driver of community healing and an important economic contributor. If you’re interested in Catalyst's future Arts & Intersections convenings, please reach out to Kamaal Martin at [email protected]. #artsfunding #sandiegoartist #sandiegoartsscene #artsphilanthropy #artsecosystem #artsfunders Kim Phillips-Pea Kelsey Daniels Katie Ruiz Dinah Poellnitz Felicia Shaw Rich Magale, MBA Dr. LaWana Richmond JohnnieRenee Nelson Kamaal Martin James Halliday
