About us
Public interest in catch welfare is growing. Four out of five European consumers now think that fish deserve the same protection as other food-production animals. Tesco and other leading supermarkets are setting welfare standards for seafood products. Government agendas also increasingly consider fish welfare. The debate on animal welfare is currently dominated by NGOs, policy officers and researchers. This may lead to unrealistic expectations or suggestions that do not match the daily reality onboard. To create workable solutions for fisheries, it is key that industry is involved. This is why we created the Catch Welfare Platform. By bringing scientists, fisheries and their suppliers together, we aim to create pragmatic solutions to improve catch welfare. -------------------------- The Catch Welfare concept promotes profitability and sustainability in wild capture fisheries by reducing stress in the catch. 🎣🐟 Of course fish have feelings. Hans van de Vis, animal welfare researcher at Wageningen Livestock Research, is quite clear about that. The issue of fish #wellbeing is here to stay! In November 2023, the Catch Welfare Platform was created by WUR, Michelle Boonstra, the Norwegian institute of Marine research and the Nofima institute. Now, for the first time, fisheries, traders and retailers, research institutions and NGOs are consulting each other to make improvements, with the welfare of the fish and the efficiency of the sector in mind. Another Expert Group meeting took place last week, this time it was the small-scale fisheries group's turn. Luis Bentes from the Centre of Marine Sciences (CCMAR) presented the results of their welfare assessment in the 🐙 octopus pot and trap fishery as part of the Carefish/catch project. Moses Tenywa presented his very interesting case on the challenges fisheries are facing in Lake Victoria, Uganda. In two weeks' time, it's the turn of the Demersal Expert Group. #catchwelfare

📣 🐟 Joint Announcement: Ethical Seafood Research & AU-IBAR Launch Factsheet on Aquatic Animal Welfare in Africa The factsheet on Aquatic Animal Welfare in Africa embodies the collective perspective of the African Union - Inter African Bureau for Animal Resources (AU-IBAR) and Ethical Seafood Research (ESR) regarding the welfare of aquatic animals. Drawing insights from key AU-IBAR guiding documents on aquatic animals, including the Policy Framework and Reform Strategy and the Animal Welfare Strategy, this factsheet encompasses all facets of aquatic animal welfare in Africa, with a primary focus on capture fisheries and aquaculture. Both institutions acknowledge the significant welfare challenges facing aquatic animals involved in the 'ornamental' trade. The overarching goal of this factsheet is to underscore the importance of aquatic animal welfare in Africa and raise awareness about the imperative to preserve it.
