🌍 Revolutionizing Urban Growth with Integrated Infrastructure Planning! 🌍 https://bit.ly/4cY7o8r 🌇 As cities expand and infrastructure ages, traditional planning is falling short. Integrated infrastructure planning is here to #change the game with a #sustainable, forward-thinking approach! 💡 This #innovative method synchronizes the planning, design, and construction of infrastructure projects, minimizing disruptions through a clever "dig once" strategy. By bringing together all stakeholders—government agencies, utility providers, community groups, and the private sector—it ensures projects align with #community goals, building #trust and #transparency. ♻️ Integrated planning is key to creating #resilient, #sustainable communities. By incorporating climate adaptation, green infrastructure, and disaster risk reduction, it future-proofs our cities. Leveraging tools like GIS and data analytics, planners can optimize projects and prioritize investments smartly. 💪 Jenny Humphreys, AICP says it best, “We’re slashing construction costs, overcoming workforce limitations, and building stronger infrastructure.” Integrated infrastructure planning isn’t just a choice; it’s a necessity. Let’s work #together to create vibrant, resilient, and sustainable communities for #future generations. 🌱🏙️ https://bit.ly/4cY7o8r #CompleteCorridors

#NewPerspectives: Environmental engineer Danielle Liu, EIT's attention to detail helps her connect #data to real-world replacements on #lead projects. Danielle is making a name for herself as she tackles projects that get the lead out to deliver high-quality drinking water. When we caught up with her on site, she was in the midst of prepping a client-facing presentation on the service line inventory process for a large industry conference in California. We wanted to find out what makes her good at what she does. 🔍 What’s one lesson you’ve learned since supporting #LSLR projects? “When you’re talking to water customers about the replacement process, remember that they probably aren’t water engineers! They’re not familiar with the terms our team uses every day, so you have to meet them where they are to make a program successful. We wouldn’t ask a resident to show us a service line in their maintenance room, right? Who has a maintenance room? Our team knows we’re probably talking about a laundry room. Talk to customers like you’d talk to your friends, because the process can sound intimidating when you don’t speak the technical language. You have to put yourself in their shoes." 💧 How’d you find your way to the lead in drinking water team? "I started at CDM Smith as a fully remote intern during the pandemic–all of my classmates' internships were cancelled, and CDM Smith felt like one of the only firms to actually double down on their internship program in 2020. In that time, I was plugged in on a project in Trenton supporting data QAQC working directly with the project engineer. When it was time to go back to college, the team still wanted my help! CDM Smith actually extended my internship part-time during school, and I got a full-time offer before I graduated. I had the opportunity to learn the ropes and step into more responsibility." 💡 What makes lead projects “click” for you? “They’re very tactile, you see the plans and the data come together, and you get that real world context. Every replacement makes an impact on the water quality for a household. I like that every project is different—what works for one utility might not work for another, and the legislation is constantly evolving. So many factors come into play to create the best approach, like client-specific needs and the evolving regulatory landscape. That's where Sandy Kutzing, PE, PMP comes into play. She has a pulse on the high-level legislation. She's always there for me as a resource." The inventory deadline is coming up in October—If you're stuck trying to determine if a service line should be classified as galvanized requiring replacement (GRR), our experts created this decision tree to help: https://bit.ly/3WlQYQ2

🚨The Lead and Copper Rule inventory deadline is coming up this October! Are you taking action to comply with the regulations?🚨 🌲If your utility is stuck trying to determine if a service line should be classified as galvanized requiring replacement (#GRR), our experts created this decision tree to help: https://bit.ly/3WlQYQ2 ❗If the customer side of the service line is galvanized and the utility side is not lead (e.g., copper, plastic, brass, galvanized, or other materials), this decision tree can assist in determining whether the service line should be classified as galvanized requiring replacement (GRR). 📈This flowchart is based on the Federal Lead and Copper Rule Revisions (LCRR) requirements, so be sure to verify the specific requirements for your state! Click the link to start using the decision tree today!🌳 https://bit.ly/3WlQYQ2

🛣️ Hebron Avenue serves as the gateway to retail and dining destinations in the town of Glastonbury, CT. Welcoming 20,000 cars daily, the roadway faced traffic congestion issues and had the highest crash rates in the town. CDM Smith's complete corridors team took on the challenge of redesigning the roadway to prioritize #safety, #multimodal access, constructability, and aesthetics to improve operations and #mobility for residents. Read the full article here: https://bit.ly/3tHX1E9 🚧 Our team conducted detailed traffic capacity analysis and microsimulations utilizing VISSIM software, to ensure roundabouts were the best choice to meet the goals of the project. The addition of the roundabouts aimed to calm traffic by reducing vehicle speeds and provide accommodations for pedestrians and bicyclists, making road conditions safer with an ability to minimize collisions by 60%. Design elements such as lighting and landscaping were also implemented to contribute to walkability and aesthetics. The team developed traffic maintenance plans to minimize disruption and keep traffic flowing during construction. 🌐 Through a holistic, #completecorridors approach, the town of Glastonbury is now safer and easier to navigate, “It was very important for us to recognize that this project was multi-disciplinary and required integration of several design elements to make it a complete corridor,” says Rebecca Hall, PE, PTOE, RSP2I, PMP. “As a Glastonbury resident, I have seen Hebron Avenue become a more vibrant corridor; during busy periods, like the midday lunch hour, I have noticed that driving through this corridor is much easier.” https://bit.ly/3tHX1E9

“What we’re finding with #PFAS is that there’s no one-size-fits-all.” How one community tackled the challenge with multiple treatment technologies: https://lnkd.in/gGTvWySD The Ayer Department of Public Works found its answer to PFAS via multiple adsorption technologies at two treatment plants. For the Grove Pond WTP, the answer was anion exchange. For the Spectacle Pond WTP, granular activated carbon proved to be more effective. The CDM Smith design team used bench-scale testing at our Bellevue Research and Testing Laboratory to pit technologies against each other in Ayer's unique circumstances, and worked closely with regulators to gain approval for the first AIX implementation in the state. When it comes to PFAS, “you really have to look at what the different options are with respect to your operations, your water quality, the expertise of your staff," said the town's DPW superintendent. PFAS regulation has grown ever more complicated. We work with communities around the US to find solutions. 🌱 The Greater Lawrence Sanitary District (GLSD) in North Andover, MA is transforming food waste into renewable energy! Their Organics to Energy Project supports a combined heat and power system, driving the plant toward net-zero operations. ⚡The same way we digest food and turn it into #energy, GLSD's advanced biogas production from food waste allows the facility to operate independently of the grid, potentially saving up to $2.5 million annually! 🌍 For over 40 years, GLSD and CDM Smith have partnered to protect the Merrimack River. Today, their collaboration sets a new standard in #sustainability, with GLSD's commitment to turning waste into power and leading the way in environmental stewardship. 🖥️ Watch the full video and read more on the revolutionary subject here: https://bit.ly/4c1GfQt #Sustainability #Innovation #CleanEnergy #GLSD
