Most Climate Collective community members have some touchpoints with Indigenous Communities, land tenure and benefit sharing frameworks in their day-to-day operations.  Our community call this month was focused on IP’s perspectives on biodiversity finance frameworks, data sovereignty and the opportunities and perils brought by nature markets. We had the privilege to hear from Nkwi - a PhD researcher at University of Arizona and leader of Kinray Hub: Indigenous-led R&, Belen - President of Fundación Pachamama, and Emil - a renewable energy researcher of  the Business & Human Rights Resource Centre and member of the Kichwa People of Sarayakul. Here are the main takeaways:  📊 Data Sovereignty:  Ensuring Indigenous control over data is essential for equitable development and fair benefit-sharing. Tech ownership does not equal data ownership 💰  Guiding principles: Indigenous rights and nature rights are guiding principles that need to be integrated into all business and climate finance projects. 🔎Effective biodiversity financing: Effective, accessible and timely funding mechanisms that work for IPs are essential. Project developers need to pay close attention and work with IPs to understand what effective financing means for IPs and how to use best practice for Free Prior and Informed Consent. Here are some of the many thought provoking comments made by the presenters: “Data is kinship (sharing of characteristics and origin) to our land, our ways of life, our culture and laws. Data is what connects these pieces to each other. Data doesn’t exist without Indigenous Peoples” shares Nkwi. “Data has a real tangible value and to extract data from IP territories or based on their knowledge without fair compensation isn’t right. Data and strong data governance can offer an economic value to IPs and can support us in protecting our way of being.” “One of the leading programs of Fundación Pachamama is the bioeconomy program. We're working with seven different products and their value changes from the forest. We are putting together many strategic partners around our new bioeconomy hub that is creating possibilities to increase livelihoods for the communities, enhance biodiversity and avoid deforestation.” - Belen “IPs and their cultures have a close relationship with their lands, but 65% of Indigenous territories are threatened by extractive/industrial activities. This is a direct threat to IPs' cultures. If we lose our lands, we lose our culture, and we are not IPs anymore. Consider that policies sometimes have unintended consequences - the 30% goal for conservation of land can be a threat for IPs as governments think IP land is an easy option to ‘protect’ not considering how that impacts the livelihood opportunities or the cultural practices of the IPs living there.” -Emil 📣Attending #NYCW? Connect with Nkwi, Belen and Emil to better understand how to engage with IPs and make sure your work respects and integrates Indigenous knowledge.

🦋 Emil Sirén Gualinga recently reminded me that frameworks and solutions to nature and biodiversity need to be effective, accessible and timely. 💫 This schematic - and the proposed research agenda - is just that. Thanks Thomas White for authoring and sharing. 🦋 Nature Positive' is a term gaining traction in the business community to align organisational practices with societal goals to halt and reverse biodiversity loss 🦋 But achieving nature-positive ambitions will require transformative changes to business operations, and is a substantial challenge given high uncertainties around what actions to take. 🦋 Collaborative and targeted research is required to guide strategies that lead to effective outcomes for nature, and avoid unintended environmental and social consequences. 🌱 For this to have the intended impact, I encourage the authors and the users of these findings to center your thinking around nature justice, including the incorporation of Indigenous R&D and knowledge/practices. Kinray Hub: Indigenous-led Klimate Research & Resiliency Development and Nkwi Flores could certainly help. Led by researchers at The Leverhulme Centre for Nature Recovery The Biodiversity Consultancy Ltd - Congratulations to the authors: Talitha Bromwich Ashley Bang Leon Bennun Joe W Bull E.J. We are so excited to welcome Earthly into the Climate Collective! In 2020, a shared passion for tackling climate change led entrepreneurs Oliver Bolton and Lorenzo Curci to found Earthly. Their mission? To empower businesses to invest in high-quality nature-based solutions. They’re a team of entrepreneurs, engineers, and scientists with a shared passion for reversing climate breakdown and restoring our planet. Their focus? Identifying and funding the most impactful nature-based projects globally, optimizing benefits for carbon reduction, biodiversity restoration, and improved livelihoods. Here's what sets Earthly apart: 🔬 Science-Driven Screening & Monitoring: Their NbS project scoring tool analyzes 106 data points evenly split across carbon, biodiversity, and people, all backed by the guidance of their independent scientific advisory board. They also leverage geospatial data for ongoing project monitoring and are developing a climate risk/resilience module. From the 400 projects they’ve screened over the last 12 months only 8% of projects have met their minimum standards across all quality indicators. 📈 Scaling Nature-Based Solutions: Earthly’s platform is designed to accelerate funding to NbS and their screening tool is agonistic to registry or ecosystems allowing them to build bespoke portfolios of projects for their clients that align with their values, geographies and wider sustainability strategies. Their 650+ clients include heavyweights CaixaBank, Activision Blizzard, S&P Global, and L'Oréal. 🦋 Voluntary Biodiversity Credits: They’re recently launched a new Voluntary Biodiversity Credit product based on the UK’s new compliance scheme. Each credit is linked to a 9 sq/m plot and legally protected for biodiversity net gain over 30 years. The first purchase was from King (Candy Crush) was for 543 credits at ~$35,000. Earthly slots right into the Climate Collective Nature & Biodiversity cohort -> we’re thrilled to support you in your goal to protect and restore >1% of the planet by 2030 (>150 million hectares!). ✅ Colombia-based #environmental standard Cercarbono has approved a first methodology that project developers can use to generate voluntary #biodiversity credits. 🌱 Developed in the Colombian Amazon, Savimbo's Indicator Species Biodiversity Methodology (#ISBM) was co-designed in collaboration with #IndigenousPeoples representatives from 25 countries and 55 Indigenous nations living in high-biodiverse zones. 💫 Massive shoutout to the Savimbo team - Hector Jhony Lopez, Fernando Lezama and Drea Burbank - for this milestone, and to Alex Saer for leveraging his platform as a catalyst. Why is this newly approved methodology such a big deal? 1. The Kunming-Montreal Protocol - or the #biodiversityplan for short - sets out goals for biodiversity finance (target #19), to "substantially and progressively increase the level of financial resources from all sources, in an effective, timely and easily accessible manner". 2. Going deeper it calls upon the world to: - Stimulate innovative schemes such as payment for ecosystem services, green bonds, biodiversity offsets and credits, benefit-sharing mechanisms, with environmental and social safeguards; - Enhancing the role of collective actions, including by indigenous peoples and local communities; and - Enhancing the effectiveness, efficiency and transparency of resource provision and use. 3. We all know that Indigenous Peoples voices and practices have been underfunded and ignored too long. In Drea's words: "It’s a big deal when you hear a voice that’s been missing. Like a puzzle piece falling into place". #greenaccountability #climatejustice Climate Collective regularly purchases small amounts of carbon credits and biodiversity credits as another way to contribute to innovation in these markets - beyond the incubation work we do to support early stage #climatetech and #naturetech entrepreneurs. 🐅 I warmly recommend others to purchase some of #johnysjaguar credits too! 💫

Strengthening resilience of vulnerable communities is central to a just transition, and something Climate Collective and our community care about deeply. Through our partnership with BFA Global we became an early supporter of #TECA (Triggering Exponential Climate Action)- a collaborative effort to unlock bottoms-up climate resilience. A diverse community has come together around TECA with the intent to  launch 100 ventures by 2026 focused on strengthening climate resilience. In other words, TECA is working with local communities to identify their needs and pairs these needs with tech and entrepreneurship to build locally appropriate solutions for climate adaptation and resilience.  VUA Inc., a TECA alumni company, is a great example.  A financial services provider for underserved small-scale fishers (#SFFs) Vua received a Climate Collective grant in 2023 to leverage AI and digital infrastructure to empower fishermen to increase incomes, improve credit scores, and build more resilient businesses. Together with fellow supporters of TECA, Meta, BMGF, IUCN, we look forward to seeing Vua help fisherfolk navigate unpredictable climate challenges and economic uncertainties so they can ensure the preservation of marine ecosystems. ++ Opportunity for businesses to be featured in #nature #tech report ++ 🔎 We're taking stock of the business case of investing in nature and are looking particularly at the increasing number of corporates - using - funding - or in other ways supporting - #naturetech, that could serve as inspiration for a broader audience. 🌱 Climate Collective is teaming up with Nature4Climate KPMG and Nature Tech Collective to document the use and relevance of nature data and tech for corporates on their nature journeys. The report is part of an ongoing series of reports from #Nature4Climate - part of The Nature Conservancy - covering nature technology uses and opportunities from a corporate perspective. We are looking to speak to a few more corporates in the coming weeks to learn more about how you view and use nature data and tech. We're curious about things like: How are you using nature data? What nature tech pilot have you supported? What nature data is missing for you to make different decisions? What nature tech are you developing internally? ..do you wish you could have access to? How do you think about/engage with nature restoration projects? Biodiversity credits? What #nature #entrepreneurs are you mentoring?.. 🙏🏻 Pease let me know if you or someone on your team is open to chatting with us - or tag someone you think would. Everyone talks about carbon credit integrity. What does that really mean? Just launching new frameworks or principles for high integrity isn’t enough. For us, carbon markets need to focus on both process integrity and data integrity. Data integrity for a carbon credit essentially means high-quality data underlying the carbon asset.  So, how do you know if your carbon credit has strong data integrity? The easiest way is to build a ‘data package’ for the credits you’re considering. A data package is a clear, comprehensive overview of a carbon credit project. It’s essential for understanding a project’s real impact and making informed decisions. Together with RMI we’ve developed a guide which shows you how to build a data package (including how, when, and why to connect with various data actors in the VCM to secure carbon crediting data). If you find it difficult to find high quality carbon credits our guide might just make it a bit easier👉 https://lnkd.in/djqkMqVA Anna Lerner Nesbitt Caitlin Smith Apoorva Sahay Sara Herrin Bonnie Lei Josh Henretig Eduardo Caudillo Ana Velástegui
