Recipe for a Room is a model-making contest about building spatial, sculptural, miniature rooms while fostering fun, creativity, and professional mentorship. Join us for the 2024 edition next Thursday, 9/5: https://bit.ly/4dEyB0e Two-person teams, each comprised of a student and architect mentor, will design small-scale places for the displaced. We challenge teams to create one-person shelters which can be folded up into suitcase-size, portable packs. Net proceeds from the event will go to a non-profit working to directly assist displaced persons. Over 180,000 asylum seekers have arrived in New York City since the spring of 2022. Many did not choose this city as their destination, but all are travelers who left a previous home behind. In September 2023, Mayor Eric Adams stated, “New York is one of the few states where you have the right to shelter… however, while our compassion is limitless, our resources are not.” Shelter is only guaranteed for 30 days for single individuals and 60 days for families. AIA New York (est. 1857) serves 5,500 architects and allies. Its partner, Center for Architecture, serves the public.
About us
Founded in 1857, the American Institute of Architects New York (AIANY) is the oldest and largest chapter of the American Institute of Architects. Members include more than 5,500 practicing architects, allied professionals, students, and public members interested in architecture and design. AIANY is dedicated to three goals: design excellence, public outreach, and professional development. AIANY shares a home with sister organization Center for Architecture, a leading cultural venue for architecture and the built environment in New York City, informed by the complexity of the City’s urban fabric and in dialogue with the global community. The Center for Architecture has the unique advantage of drawing upon the ideas and experiences of practicing architects to produce thought-provoking exhibitions, informative public programs, and quality design education experiences for K-12 students. It also leads New York City’s annual month-long architecture and design festival, Archtober. The Center for Architecture’s aim is to further public knowledge about New York City architecture and architects, foster exchange and collaboration among members of the design, development, building, scholarly, and policy sectors, and inspire new ideas about the role of design in communities by presenting contemporary and practical issues in architecture and urbanism to a general audience.

Join us 9/26 for The Nature-Based Industrial Revolution: Redefining Future-Forward Architecture: https://bit.ly/4dH31i2 There has never been a more important time to elevate the role of the built environment in addressing the climate crises. This discussion will elaborate on potential future scenarios in the context of the new book Habitat: Vernacular Architecture for a Changing Climate (Thames & Hudson, 2024). Given our ecosystem’s increasing frailty, the role of architecture and building in a post-digital era, and the desperate need to record fading cultural traditions, this book is more relevant than ever. Organized by the AIANY Design for Risk and Reconstruction Committee as part of #ClimateWeekNYC 2024, the event addresses the science-policy brief recommendations of “Nature-Based Industrial Revolution for Inclusive Sustainable Development,” a submission for the Multi-Stakeholder Forum on Science, Technology and Innovation for the Sustainable Development Goals (STI Forum 2024) at United Nations Headquarters New York.

This Sunday, join us for an architectural walking tour of Madison Square Park! Register: https://bit.ly/3YQLHCQ In 1847, Madison Square Park (named for the fourth U.S. President, James Madison) was established as a residential neighborhood but quickly became a center for larger commercial and entertainment buildings. Today, it boasts a lively mix of insurance, finance, design, and residential uses. The park lays claim to home of the original Madison Square Garden, the founding of baseball, and the very first Shake Shack. Early skyscrapers like the Flatiron Building, Metropolitan Life, and the NY Life Building will be discussed, as well as the architectural legacies of Stanford White, Daniel Burnham, Napoleon LeBrun, and Cass Gilbert.
