The South Carolina Community Health Worker Association (SCCHWA), PASOs, and the Center for Community Health Alignment (CCHA) recently partnered to put on a “Rally on the Roof” at the SCCHWA office on Lady Street here in Columbia, South Carolina. Organized to create awareness about the critical roles of CHWs in our healthcare and public health systems in SC and to celebrate and mobilize community health workers (CHWs) across the Palmetto State during CHW Awareness Week, the event featured speakers such as Maria Martin, our very own Julie Smithwick and Lillie Fox, and Denmark, South Carolina native Bakari Sellers. We look forward to gathering again next year for CHW Awareness Week. Until September 19th, 2024, the Lived Realities of Community Health Workers in South Carolina Photovoice Exhibit will be on display at the Richland Library Main on Assembly Street here in Columbia, South Carolina. Curated by the Center for Community Health Alignment (CCHA) at the Arnold School of Public Health at the University of South Carolina, the exhibit features pictures taken and captioned by community health workers (CHWs) across the Palmetto State. It works to spread the word about and elevate the voices of CHWs in South Carolina. You can stop by the library to view the pictures and read about how CHWs describe their work with communities in the captions below each picture. The exhibit is located on the library’s first floor near the elevators and escalator. The Center for Community Health Alignment staff recently had the pleasure of participating in a two-day workshop facilitated by MSW and long time CHW advocate April Hicks. For several days, we explored cognitive behavioral therapy with April as it relates both to our personal life experiences, but also how it is an important tool for CHWs engaging with communities. Last month the South Carolina Community Health Worker Association (SCCHWA) Board, CCHA, and PASOs met with the S.C. Department of Public Health (SC DPH) Interim Agency Director Dr. Edward Simmer, Deputy Director of Health Promotion and Services Dr. Brannon Traxler, and Director of Community Engagement Suzanne Sander to discuss opportunities to support CHWs and growing the CHW workforce across the Palmetto State. Candice: [This picture] is about hope because I hope that with the work that I do in my community, I hope that I bring hope to my clients and to the people in my community to know that things might be hard right now, but there's a way to get out of it and we'll figure that out. So the picture with the people standing in line is from the Bethune Community Center in Bethune, SC. This family in particular I remember that the mother didn’t speak Spanish, and the father only a little.
