Our mission is to grow and strengthen local and journalism and, in doing so, serve the residents of New Jersey.
About us
The Center was founded in 2012 in response to the downsizing of New Jersey news organizations and the changes in the ownership of regional public media. These shifts in the news and information landscape hurt the volume of local news available in a state that has historically had limited news coverage, due to its proximity to the major metropolitan areas of New York City and Philadelphia. With 565 municipalities packed into a densely populated state, New Jersey was—and is—ripe for innovation in local journalism. The Center coordinates statewide and regional reporting, connecting more than 280 local news and information providers through its flagship project, the NJ News Commons. The Commons helps partners to share content and encourages them to collaborate and to support one another. The Center also conducts and publishes research on emerging ideas and best practices, focusing on local journalism, business models, and ecosystem mapping. The Center convenes national programs, including an annual national summit for journalism organizations to foster the conditions, ideas, and practices that lead to stronger collaborative journalism across the U.S. The Center’s annual reports offer a detailed history of programs and impact. The Center is a grant-funded program within the School of Communication and Media at Montclair State University. Funding from the University supports the director’s salary and benefits, office space for the Center and its staff, and infrastructure support and shared services such as IT, development, marketing, and administrative assistance. The Center receives core support from the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, the Democracy Fund and the Abrams Foundation, as well as project support from many other grantmaking sources and sponsors.

So excited about this and ready for the work ahead!
We at Hearken, Inc alongside many partners (see below) have been creating so many valuable resources, trainings, fellowship programs and opportunities around elections and democracy, that we needed a whole website to list them all. We've gathered best practices for busy news professionals with partners including the just-announced Knight Election Hub (knightelectionhub.org) and the Center for Cooperative Media, Solutions Journalism Network, Trusting News, Good Conflict and The Center for Journalism & Democracy at Howard University. 💪 Supercharge coverage with curated offerings designed by and for journalists, including an 📆 interactive timeline to help journalists understand where to put their energy in the coming weeks and months ahead of the election (democracy-sos.org); 🗳 Build engagement and trust with Election SOS, including a ✨ new calendar with trainings, application deadlines and key dates in the election cycle (electionsos.org); 🛠 Understand and respond to democratic backsliding with the Democracy Toolkit, a learning site to equip reporters, newsroom leaders and journalism educators with vetted, relevant resources to help meet this moment (democracytoolkit.press); 🤝 Participate in the Sept. 15 Democracy Day collaboration (usdemocracyday.org). If the thought has crossed your mind: I thought Hearken was an engagement company? You are right! It's one of the things we do. We think of engagement as "small d" democracy - enabling people to better participate and make decisions in shaping their world. Our approach is to listen and co-create with those we serve, and help them do the same for the people they serve. As hundreds of reporters and editors over the years have been telling us they need help doing election coverage better, we listened. We are SO grateful to the fabulous collaborators making all of this possible to support the journalism ecosystem & democracy. Bridget Thoreson, Scott Klein, Ryan Pitts, Kali-Ahset Amen, PhD, Nikole Hannah-Jones, Jaisal N., Linda Shaw, Joy Mayer, Lynn Walsh, Amanda Ripley, Hélène Biandudi Hofer, Beatrice Forman, Stefanie Murray, Joe Amditis, Rachel Glickhouse to name a few!
